Step4 Reading (presentation and practice) (25 minutes)
1.(1)(show the pictures on Page 2 and 3)Ask students to look at the title of
the reading passage and the pictures and guess who those people are and what the text might be about. (2)Background introduction
Anne: (1929--1945) was a German-Jewish teenager.
Historical background: The Nazi Party ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. One of their key policies was to kill all the Jews in Europe. If any person known to be Jews were found, they would be sent to concentration camps. Families were separated. For many days, they went without food, water,
or fresh air. To avoid this terrible fate, some Jewish families went into hiding, so did Anne and her family. During the time, Anne made a best friend.
2. Listen to the tape and fill in the form
The time of the story The place of the story Anne’s best friend The length of time they hid away The date of the diary
3. Skim the text and summarise the main idea of each paragraph.
Para 1: Anne made her diary her best friend whom she could tell
everything.
Para 2: Anne’s diary acted as her true friend during the time she and her
family had to hide away for a long time
Para 3: Having been kept indoors for so long, Anne grew so crazy about
everything to do with nature.
Para 4: One evening, Anne stayed awake until half past eleven in order to
have a look at the moon.
Para 5: Anne was only able to look at nature through dirty curtains.
4. Read the passage again and discuss in groups of four on the following questions:
(1) What is an ordinary diary like according to Anne? What about her
diary?
(2)Why was she so crazy about things to do with nature?
(3) Why did she stay awake on purpose until very late one evening?
(4)Why didn’t she dare open the window when the moon was too bright? Ask the students to answer and check the answers:
(1)According to Anne, an ordinary diary is where most people like to set down a series of facts. But Anne wrote down her deepest feelings and thoughts in her diary. She told everything to her best friend --- her diary. (2)Because she had been indoors too long, she was so eager to see the outdoor world --- the blue sky, the singing birds, the beautiful flowers, the bright moon, everything.
(3)Because she wanted to have a good look at the bright moon.
(4)Because she was afraid that she might be discovered by the German Nazis
Step5 Summary (1minutes)
T: Today we have learned a lot about Anne and her diary. From the passage,
we can see Anne is eager for the beautiful nature, free life and true friendship. A life without a friend is a life without a sun. Since we live in such a wonderful life, we need to cherish our friends more.
Step6 Homework (30seconds)
(1) Review the important words, phrases and difficult sentences in the text (2) Write a short story about you and your friend. T: Class is over. See you next time! Ss: See you! Step7 Reflection
Through this class, the students practiced the skills of listening, speaking,
reading and writing, especially the reading abilities, such as guessing, skimming and so on. Lead-in with a piece of music aroused students’ interests very well. Group work and discussion developed the students’ awareness of cooperation and improved their ability to cooperate. There was still some shortage for me to improve in the future classes. For example, I could not budget the time very well, and I was lack of eye-contact with students.
