Reading in my life
As Francis Bacon said “studies serve for delight, for ornament and for ability.” I couldn’t agree with it any more. Reading is one of the components of my life. It’s very convenient for me to increase my knowledge, enrich my mind, broaden the horizons and get information without going outside. I can read at anywhere I like. At the same time, it’s the perfect way to kill time and relax after a busy day and the pressures of study. For me, it is regarded as a kind of entertainment. Reading can be a wonderful escape from the routine life. It provides an opportunity for a quiet、peaceful time alone.
Reading is a good habit. Every day I would like to set aside enough time for reading. Presently I prefer to read books about literary and philosophy. When I was in middle school, my Chinese teacher introduced us a lot of famous books and advised us that we should read them as much as possible time and again. From that moment, I cultivated the interests in reading. However, all the books were written in Chinese. What if the books I read were written in English? Maybe my English level would become higher now.
As a student majored in English, reading is a best way to enlarge my English vocabulary and improve my writing ability. Actually, that’s one of the reasons why I attach to reading. The words in the articles are used exactly, and then in the process of reading, the new words are kept into the long-memory. It is more fast and effective to remember words than reciting a dictionary. At the same time, I can record the beautiful sentences, and then they can be put into my writing
homework. As the proverb says “Thousands of knowledge accumulation breeds a godlike mind.”
What’s more, reading influences my character and my quality. Through reading, I become more mature and rational to some extent. My attitudes toward life were changed. Once I read a book which introduces the children living in the west, I have a grasp of the microcosm of the people living in the remote places. The poor conditions they are living, the disease they have to suffer and the misfortune they have to tolerate touch my heart deeply. Compared with their fates, I am luckily enough. The illustrations of the text and the words linger in my mind until this moment. I’m satisfied with what I have possessed and I don’t complain about anything. I start to make the best use of money and do not waste money any more. I have the sense that what I should do is to cherish my life and make it better. Troubles exist inevitably, but I will face it bravely and challenge it resolutely in a positive attitude. I feel very grateful for my father and mother could give me such a beautiful life. Also they are very pleasure when they find their willful girl disappears. At the same time I learn to take care of my parents, consider the feelings of them and stand in their perspectives.
I like reading biography as well. The great men’s experiences、thoughts and words were recorded in the books. Their spirits and stories influence me a lot. Through reading, I learn from them who teach me how to get along well with the others and deal with things in the most effective and acceptable way. I realize that the most generous and kind-hearted people will be more popular than the other people. Braveness and persistence are two indispensable factors to get success.
Reading changes me and my life with an invisible hand. My heart becomes stronger and stronger.
Among all the books that I have read, what I like best is Gone with the Wind, which has been regarded as one of the most favorite classic love stories in American literature. Scarlet, the female leading role, teaches me so much. What a terrible situation one can imagine when the civil war broke out. People had no houses to live in, no food to eat, no clothes to wear. But Scarlet fights against the difficulties firmly and bravely. Her braveness、independence、diligence、optimism and the spirit to pursue happy life all deserve my study and change me. “Girls can do absolutely anything that boys can do. A woman can reach any height in any discipline if she works hard enough.” “Tomorrow is another day.” I love these words. I love the characters of Scarlet. She teaches me to be positive and enjoy the light of life in the darkness.
Though I like reading, most of my reading materials are limited in the literatures. In order to get more information about the outside world and keep in touch with it, I must expand the scope of reading; I should also read some articles about economy, politics and news, etc. And then I will be rich in knowledge. News comes every day, if I stop learning for a day, I will be lost. It’s said that one day books will be replaced by the e-books. I expect that day will never come. When I turn up the books, all my thoughts are absorbed in the books. I enjoy this feeling. It seems that I was part of the fiction or factual writings, in which I become privy to the books characters and their surroundings. Reading is great for stimulating my mind and imagination. My emotion changes with the protagonist. But when I am
reading in the computers and e-books, it seems that there is no business with me no matter how advanced the tool is.
In my opinion, we must be interested in reading, grasp the methods in reading, and then we can benefit from it. The knowledge we achieve from reading will be changed into good results. Reading is, most importantly, an activity that can teach us, change us, and permit us to grow to our full potential. Just as Bacon said “Reading makes a full man”.
