Compared to adults, children seem to be moving constantly. So it's no surprise that most parents who are quizzed about their child's physical activity level describe their children as fairly active. But a new study of nearly 2,000 British school children suggests that many parents overestimate the amount of physical activity their children are really getting.

The researchers equipped 1,2 British school children, ages 9 and 10, with accelerometers that measure all physical activity during a given time period. The research, known as the Speedy study collected the exercise data from children at 92 schools in Norfolk, England, between April and July 2007.

A child was regarded inactive if he or she recorded less than an hour a day of physical activity.Although the majority of children studied were getting enough physical activity, a sizable minority of children were not.Overall, 39 percent of girls and 18 percent of boys studied were getting less than an hour of physical activity each day.

But if you asked the parents of the inactive children to describe their child's activity level, the vast majority?80 percent?described their children as fairly or very physically active, according to the findings published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.Interestingly, the children themselves had more awareness about their lack of physical activity.Overall, 40 percent of children overestimated their physical activity.

But it wasn't the parents of overweight children who were most likely to guess wrong about physical activity levels. The parents who were most out of touch about their child's physical fitness were more likely to have children who were slim.Parents of girls were also more likely to overestimate physical activity. The researchers noted that parents should be educated about the importance of physical activity for children even if the child is not overweight. \"Parents of slim children appear to assume that their children are adequately active,\" the study authors reported.\"Increasing awareness regarding health benefits of physical activity beyond weight control might help have a correct idea of physical activity levels and encourage behavior change.\"

41. According to the Speedy study, what kind of children can be judged physically in active? A.Slim children

B.Children with less than an hour a day of physical activity C. Overweight children.

D. Children out of touch with their parents for a long time

42. What does the writer probably mean by saying “a sizable minority of children were not” in Paragraph 3? A.The amount of children’s physical activity is far from the writer’s satisfaction. B. Only a small number of children were not getting enough physical activity. C. A small number of children didn’t overestimate their physical activity. D. The minority of children were not studied at all. 43. The passage is intended to _________________ .

A. encourage parents to fairly judge their children’s physical activity levels B. persude parents to keep an eye on their children’s weight. C. urge children to wear accelerometers during exercise D. advise parents to keep in touch with their children

B

BELIEVE it or not,the color of the tie Barack Obama wore to the inauguration(就职典礼)is now a hotly debated

3

topic. The level of public interest in Obama’s tie might seem strange but many people believe his choice will symbolize the type of government he plans to run,as the color of a politician’s tie is thought to convey ideas of power, trustworthiness and more. Polities of ties

It may be the least practical item of male dress, but it is arguably the most expressive. In the UK and many other coun-tries around the world, conservative (保守的) politicians may wear a blue tie and their liberal opponents a red one.In America, the colors go the other way round. The Republicans have in recent years become associated with the color red,and the Democrats with blue. But in spite of this,Bush wears blue ties more often than any other color. What they mean

According to Sharon Haver, editor of focusonstyle.com,in America the feelings associated with colors overrule their political significance.“A guy who wants to be regarded as strong and in charge would wear red,”Haver says.Unsurprisingly, the business tycoon Donald Trump is known for wearing red ties. But what about blue?According to Haver,“Blue is a softer color...Look at the sky. It’s peaceful and calm and trustworthy.” Selecting the right tie for the right occasion ●Perfect job interview tie

Perhaps no other tie-wearing occasion is as important as the job interview. Gilchrist, the fashion expert, advises playing it safe and choosing a conservative one. Best choices are solids, stripes or small patterns. An excellent color is burgundy(深红色) or another serious color. Avoid pink or yellow, which suggests that the wearer lacks gravity. Pattern ties,Gilchrist suggests, should be limited to a maximum of three colors. A striped tie is a safe choice as this is acceptable to everyone. Last,Gilchrist recommends saving the expensive“hip”tie for those applying for glamorous creative jobs. ●Date-night tie

When picking out the right tie for taking a girl out on a date, spend more time considering color than pattern. According to studies, women are attracted to men wearing the color blue, because blue gives the image of a“stable, faithful, constant, always there”person. So what is the worst color to wear on a date?“Flattened caterpillar(毛虫)yellow-green,”according to Gilchrist,“it will repel both sexes equally.” 44.Why are people interested in the tie that Obama wore to the inauguration?

A.Because they think the tie he wore will enable them to know about his personalities and policies. B.Because they want to advise him how to select an appropriate tie for such a big occasion.

C.Because they think the tie will tell if he is trustworthy as they expected when he assumes office. D.Because they believe the tie is an essential part of dressing to a mature politician like Obama. 45.What can we infer about Bush, the former president, from the passage? A.He was probably liberal in his policies when he was in power. B.He was a Republican when he served as president.

C.He wore only blue ties and had no ties of alternative colors. D.He wanted to make himself unique by the tie that he wore.

46.The example of“the business tycoon Donald Trump” is given to __________. A.prove that color reflects people’s feelings to a certain degree B.show that Donald is so wealthy that he can afford expensive ties C.tell that Donald is physically strong and can handle everything D.explain that red is a popular color, especially with businessmen 47.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?

A.Ties can be ignored by politicians since they are the least practical item of male dress. B.Do choose ties carefully before dating, because it is the most important occasion.

4

C.Why to avoid pink or yellow ties in job interviews is that they don’t match the atmosphere. D.The more colorful the tie is,the more likely you’ll get the job you want.

C.

Organizing yourself

Many new students find it hard to do all the study that has to be done; they find themselves putting off reading assignment, jumping from subject to another and rarely being quite certain what they are trying to do during a particular study session. The best way to overcome these difficulties and to start studying efficiently is to plan your time and organize your work. Let us suppose that you have15 hours per week of classes and that you decide to allow yourself a 40—hour working week (a reasonable figure ,leaving you 70 waking hours for other activities).

You now have to decide how to divide the remaining 25 hours of private study .Naturally the decisions you make will change from week to week according to what essays have to be written and what reading has to be done. Many people find it helpful to draw up each week a seven—day timetable showing the occasions on which they will be working privately and the particular subjects that w ill be studying on each occasion .By checking such a plan at times during the week ,you can see what you have done and what you have still to do :the whole plan become more manageable .There are a number of places where you can study—college library ,public library ,home, empty classrooms ,on bus or train –and each has several obvious advantages and disadvantages .The college library is least busy in the evening , on Wednesday afternoon ,and all day Friday and Saturday. When you are deciding where to study , keep the following suggestions in mind:

1. Try to study always in the same place .After a while the familiar surroundings will help you to switch into the right frame of mind as soon as you sit down.

2. Find somewhere with as few distractions as possible.

3. Make sure that your study place has a good light and is warm (but not too warm ) and well aired. 48.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.Plan your time and organize your work. B.Overcome your difficulties. C.Be certain what you can do D.Find a quiet place for study.

49.A student’s organization of his work will need to change according to .A.how many hours he is awake B.how many subjects are required C.how many lectures he misses D.what he has to write and read that week

50.A student is advised to make a weekly plan and to check it from time to time in order to A.see whether he has calculated it properly B.see what day of the week is C.see what work still needs doing D.see how he feels at the whole week 51.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a place where you can study? A.The bus B.The train C.Home D.A public house

D

The idea for a science experiment can come from an unusual place. After watching a video of a dancing bird named Snowball,a scientist in California decided to study the ability of animals to keep the beat.

Bird lovers have long claimed that their pets have rhythm, and there are many videos of dancing birds online. Until now, scientists have suspected that humans are the only animals that can accurately keep rhythm with music.

Thanks to Snowball,that_scientific_opinion is changing. Snowball is a cockatoo,a kind of parrot, and his favorite song is“Everybody”by the Backstreet Boys. When he hears the song,he moves his feet and rocks his body with the tempo,or pace of the music,as though he is the only bird member of the boy band.

Aniruddh Patel is a neuroscientist(神经学科学家),or a scientist who studies how the brain and the nervous system contribute to learning, seeing and other mental abilities. He works at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego. After seeing Snowball's dance online,Patel visited the cockatoo at the bird rescue facility he's called home for two years.

5

The scientist played“Everybody”for Snowball and also played versions of the song that were sped up or slowed down.Sometimes,Snowball danced too fast or too slowly. Often, when there was a change in tempo,Snowball adjusted his dancing to match the rhythm. In other experiments, scientists have observed the same abilities in preschool children.

Patel isn't the only scientist who has studied Snowball's moves. Adena Schachner, who studies psychology at Harvard University, also wanted to know more about the dancing bird. Schachner's team played different musical pieces for Snowball and a parrot named Alex,as well as eight human volunteers. The scientists observed that the birds and the humans kept time to the music with about the same accuracy.

Schachner and her team watched thousands of videos of different animals moving to music. Not all the animals could dance, however .From watching the videos, the scientists observed that only animals that imitate sounds, including 14 parrot species and Asian elephants, accurately moved in time to music.

52.The underlined words “that scientific opinion” in the third paragraph refer to the theory that ________. A.birds like Snowball have the ability to keep the beat

B.humans are the only animals that can accurately keep rhythm with music C.the brain and the nervous system contribute to some mental abilities D.bird pets can have their special rhythm under human's instruction 53.From the fourth paragraph we may know that ________. A.Patel is the only scientist who has studied Snowball's moves. B.Snowball is able to adjust his dancing to match the rhythm. C.Snowball cannot dance to the versions of the song Everybody.

D.it is the brain and the nervous system that control the mental abilities.

54.The idea of studying animals' ability to keep the beat comes from ________. A.bird lovers' discovery B.humans' musical sense

C.the same abilities in children D.videos of dancing birds

55.According to the scientists,Snowball's ability to dance to music is probably related to the fact that ________. A.it is the only bird member of the Backstreet Boys band B.it has the ability to imitate sounds C.it is a kind of dancing parrot

D.it has the same abilities as preschool children

E

For years Tom Anderson's life was withered up(枯萎) by the memory of his part in a fraternity(友爱,互助会) adventure that resulted in the death of one of his classmates. He and his wife separated after six years of marriage. Then the news about Tom changed. His wife Betty came back; he earned a fine position. One day he told me what had changed his life. \"I used to think, `Nothing can undo what I have done.' The thought of my guilt would stop me in the middle of a smile or a handshake. It put a wall between my wife and me.

Then I had an unexpected visit from the person I dreaded(令人畏惧的,可怕的 )most to see -- the mother of the college classmate who died. \"Years ago\she said, \"I found it in my heart, through prayer, to forgive you. Betty forgave you. So did your friends and employers.' She paused, and then said sternly(严厉地,坚决地), \"You are the one person who hasn't forgiven Tom Anderson. Who do you think you are to stand out against the people of this town and the Lord Almighty?\" \"I looked into her eyes and found there a kind of permission to be the person I might have been if her boy had lived. For the first time in my adult life I felt worthy to love and be loved.\"

It is only through forgiveness of our mistakes that we gain the freedom to learn from experience. But forgiving our shortcomings doesn't mean denying that they exist. On the contrary, it means facing them honestly, realistically. Can a person be all-forgiving and still be human? A scientist I know spent four years as a slave laborer in Germany. His parents were killed by Nazi street bullies; his younger sister and older brother were sent to the gas chambers. This is a man who has every reason to hate. Yet he is filled with a love of life that he conveys to everyone who knows him.

6

He explained it to me the other day: \"In the beginning I was filled with hatred. Then I realized that in hating I had become my own enemy. Unless you forgive, you cannot love. And without love, life has no meaning.\" Forgiveness is truly the saving grace.
