You’ve probably never heard of Dr. June McCarroll, but she’s truly a woman who left her mark on the world. Born in Nebraska, she was a doctor who lived in California. Interestingly enough, her claim to fame (名声) lies outside the world of medicine. An accident was the trigger that got her thinking about making our highways safer. Her car was sideswiped, and she was determined to do something about cars that crowded others off the road.
Driving on a road that bulged (凸起) down its center, Dr. McCarroll noticed that the bulge helped to keep cars on their own side of the road. That gave her an idea. She tried persuading the town council to “paint a line down the middle of the road” to set an example and “lead the nation in public safety”.
She got the typical bureaucratic response. However, she was someone who would not take no for an answer. So she took her idea to the local women’s club. The vote was in support of the project. Still, she continued to face bureaucratic stubbornness for seven long years before her idea was accepted.
In 1924 the California Highway Commission agreed to experiment with a centerline on two sections of Route 99. Accidents on both test roads reduced dramatically, and soon the entire state boasted McCarroll lines on
its highways. Most of the world has since followed suit (学样).
When you come up with an idea in which you believe, go after that idea, especially if people you respect believe it’s a good one.

Once upon a time there was a spring (弹簧) who lived happily and safely inside a pen. Although he heard many noises coming from outside, he lived believing that there was nothing good outside. Even just to think about leaving his pen made him so scared that he was quite content to spend his life inside that tiny space.
However, one day, the ink ran out, and when the pen’s owner was busy changing it, there was an accident. The spring was flung (抛) through the air and landed in the toilet drain (下水道). He went through pipe after pipe, each time thinking it might be his end. Swept away by the water, he travelled on and on and on, until he ended up in a river. He stopped crying and listened all around him. Hearing birdsong, he felt encouraged to finally open his eyes. What the spring saw was the clean water of the river and all kinds of fish of many colours. Now he understood that the world was much greater than the space inside the pen, and that there had always been many things outside, waiting to be enjoyed.
After spending a while playing with the fish, he went over to the riverbank, and then moved on to a field of flowers. There he heard weeping. He followed the sound, which took him to a lovely flower that had been flattened (踩扁) by a rabbit, and could no longer stand up straight. The spring offered to be his support. For many years, immigrants (移民) have looked for better lives in New York City. The group makes up more than 40 percent of the population. New York is a city of immigrants as a result of it. A new study shows that immigrants also have helped the city’s development.
Nisha Agarwal is the immigration commissioner for the city. She says immigrants help drive the city at all levels. New York City’s economy and the quality of life have improved during the past years. There is a link between improvements in old neighborhoods and immigration. The immigrants go to these neighborhoods because they are the only places they can afford. And they help reduce the vacancy rates (空缺率) and the state of disrepair (失修).
Some of the immigrants come to New York to raise the family; others hope to realize their dreams. Robert Sampson is a professor at Harvard University. He says immigrants who tried their best to come to America are often less likely to take part in a crime and more likely to work hard. These lead to a drop in the crime rate.
Immigrant businesses also help to drive growth in New York. The immigrants do work that others will not.

阅读下面材料,并根据要求写一篇150词左右的短文。
I am 14 years old and I am 149 centimeters tall. Although I try to convince (说服) myself that being short is great, it makes me feel sad a lot. On a school trip, I had to pull a group of my friends into doing this kid course since I wasn’t tall enough to do the larger one. People always tell me they’re jealous because I always fit into clothes and always get to be in the front row of everything. This is far from the truth because I always have to cut my jeans and I can never find clothes that actually fit me well. Also, in crowds, no one ever seems to care that I’m short, so they stand right in front of me.
It hurts me sometimes, but at the end of the day, I’m okay with who I am. I still have enough time to grow, and I know many shorter people. My mom is 149 centimeters tall and my grandmother is 149 centimeters tall, too. My mom says I should make it to at least 165 cm by the time I stop growing. There are many advantages and disadvantages of being short, but I can’t change who I am. So why not pay more attention to the advantages of being short? [写作内容]

This summer holiday we did a survey among 500 parents on whether tutors are necessary.
80% of the parents surveyed think that tutors are completely necessary because they can not only help their children solve difficulties in their study timely but also know their children’s weak points more clearly through one-to-one tutoring. However, 20% of the parents who hold a different view think that private tutoring takes up so much of their children’s spare time that they can hardly find enough time for rest. What’s more, children depend more on their tutors, naturally having a side effect on their future development.
In my view, the disadvantages of having tutors outweigh its advantages because private tutoring will, in one way, limit children’s self-study ability and influence their regular classroom learning. 读写任务
Being short sometimes makes the author suffer inconvenience. However, he doesn’t care more about it since he is confident in himself.
It is believed that boys ought to grow as tall as 170 cm or above and that girls should keep slim. In this way, they will be considered as handsome or beautiful people. However, many boys or girls don’t reach this standard. As a result, they feel rather upset or depressed.
I think that these teens shouldn’t be worried so much about being short. As we all know, our height is determined by genes from our parents, not by ourselves. We can do nothing about it. Throughout history, there used to be many such good examples. Napoleon was a very short man but his strong army swept all over Europe in the early twentieth century. Doubtless, a short man can also make his contributions to society.
Therefore, there is no need to worry about our height or size. It is our ability to do things well that matters.
