Cities are taking interest in electric scooter-share systems as an affordable transportation to cut down on pollution and traffic jams. The electric scooters, which weigh between 30 and 40 pounds, reach speeds of about 15 mph. In September 2017,Santa Monica, California, became the first U.S. city to have an electric scooter-share service. Users find and unlock one of the more than 1,000 scooters with a smartphone app. A ride costs $ 1,and then 0.15 cents for each minute of riding throughout the beach town.

Bird, the startup operating the scooter-share, picks up the scooters every

night to them, and places them around Santa Monica each morning ready for people’s use. The company was created by Travis VanderZanden, who once worked in Uber and Lyft, after he realized ridesharing services failed to help with traffic jams and air pollution. Since its September 2017 beginning, Bird’s system has served more than 50,000 riders who have taken 250,000 trips — more than half of which have been in the last month. It’s since expanded (扩 张) to Venice, California, and some neighborhoods in Los Angeles and San Diego. Bird plans to expand to lots of markets by the end of 2018.

Competitors, backed by millionaires, are appearing. Two bike-share startups LimeBike and Spin, have spoken of plans to provide electric scooters in cities this year.

Electric scooters have also gotten the attention of Mayor Pete Buttigieg from South Bend,

Indiana. The city is interested in using them as a way to improve public transportation. South Bend was one of the first to use bike-share systems, which allow people to park ridesharing bikes on public land. “We love to be early pioneers,” said Buttigieg. “If we work out the safety problem, we would be open to welcoming the technology.”

“We need to make sure these new transportation systems are lawful and safe for users,”

Constance Farrell,a spokeswoman for the city of Santa Monica told CNN. “We would like to see electric scooters continue to operate in the city. They are in line with our goal of multi-modal living and carbon-light living. ” According to Farrell, there have been eight accidents, including one with a serious head injury, in Santa Monica after the scooters rolled out. Users are required to have a driver’s license (驾 照)shouldn’t ride on sidewalks or have other passengers on ,board.

Bird has given out free helmets to some riders and tells its users to ride in bike lanes, but some users ride on sidewalks, and most U.S. streets don’t have bike lanes.

“The global community of cities is going to have to work this all out for scooters,”Buttigieg said. “They can move unbelievably quickly. That’s exciting, and a little dangerous. ” 1.Why did Travis create Bird company?

A.Because he received support from millionaires and the government. B.Because many cities had electric scooter-share services. C.Because it is lawful and safe to use electric scooters. D.Because cities need better ridesharing services.

2.The words “ are in line with” in Paragragh 6 probably mean “ ”. A.stop B.meet the need of C.change D.are ahead of 3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Future electric scooters will be very slow and sale. B.Electric scooters will cause fewer accidents than cars. C.More cities will try to help with electric scooters service.

D.Future traffic problems will be solved with help of electric scooters. 4.The passage is mainly about .

A.the challenges of the electric scooter-share system in America B.the advantages and disadvantages of electric scooters in America C.the introduction of the electric scooter-share service in America D.the future of electric scooters in public transportation in America

16、All the time you spent memorizing multiplication tables(乘法表)may have made you a better mathematician, according to a new study. A team of scientists from Stanford University, in California, have shown how the brain reorganizes itself as kids learn math.

After a certain amount of time spent practicing math, kids can put away the calculator They don’t even need (计算器).to count on their fingers. They simply know the answers to subtraction(−), addition (+), and multiplication (×) facts. The quicker kids can recall basic math facts, the easier it is for them to solve more difficult math problems. The Stanford University researchers observed(观察)the brain activity of 28 students, ages 7 to 4, for the study. They took scans of the students’ brains as the students solved math calculations without the help of a calculator, pen or paper. A calculation—three plus four equals seven, for example—flashed on a screen. The students pushed a button to say if the answer was right or wrong. The scientists also recorded the response speed, and what parts of the brain became active as the kids pushed the button.

These observations showed a process called_______. Rather than using their fingers to count, or scrawling out equations(列算式)on a piece of paper, the students pulled the answers from memory. It’s as if the answers to basic subtraction, addition, and multiplication problems are kept in a long-term storage part in the brain. The storage part was built from repetition. “Experience really does matter,” said Dr. Kathy Mann Koepeke of the National Institutes of Health.

Children make the changefrom counting to fact retrieval when they are 8 to 4 years old, the study says. This is the time when most students are learning basic addition and subtraction. When kids have basic math facts memorized, the brain has more free space to learn more difficult math.

This process has benefits for the future. The study showed, as kids got older, their answers relied more on memory and became quicker and more correct. Less brain activity was involved in counting. Some children make this change quicker than others.

Scientists hope to use this research to develop new strategies(策略)to help kids learn math at all levels. One strategy the study suggests is for students to test themselves in different orders—solving five times three before five times two, for example. Mixing up the order keeps the brain active. Keep these trainings up, and you may be a math whiz in no time.

1.In the study, kids put away calculators because they can ______. A.use calculators well B.scrawl out equations C.recalling basic math facts D.count on their fingers

2.The process of “fact retrieval”in Paragraph 4probably means ______. A.picking out results by working together with their partners B.finding out answers based on practicing carefully and patiently C.trying out ways of dealing with problems by attending training D.working out problems according to what they have remembered 3.What can we know from the study?

A.Kids need to practice using calculators to keep their brains active. B.Math learners should change to counting practice at the age of 8 to 4.

C.Training by mixing up the order of multiplication tables can help learn math better. D.Less brain activity may be involved in solving difficult problems when kids get older. 5.What is the best title of the passage? A.Math from Memory B.Strategy Development C.Brain Reorganization D.Training by Repetition

18、 For 21 years, Georges Bwelle watched his ill father traveling to hospitals, which could not offer him all necessary help.

It travels into the countryside on weekends to provide free medical care. Since 2008, he and his group of volunteers have helped nearly 32,000 people.

simple operations in a school house, town hall or home, and work into the early hours of Sunday morning.

On Sunday, the team heads back to the city, tired but proud of their work. They know that their help can make a world of difference to those they help.

For his devotion to his country and people, Georges Bwelle becomes one of the 2013 Heroes voted throughout the world.

I am glad that you are interested in learning English. But I'm sorry to hear that you have some difficulties in learning English. For example, it's hard for you to remember words. You aren't good at listening and often make mistakes in grammar. You read slowly. I find some ways to improve my English. Maybe they can help you.

I copy down new words and keep reading them whenever I'm free. I read after audios and imitate the tones. I often read grammar books, borrow English newspapers and magazines and read them after class. Listen carefully and take notes in class. Practice makes perfect. So it's important to practice every day. Use English as much as possible.

There are many ways to learn English, but you should have your own way. Yours, Henry
