Turn off Your Mobile Phone
With the development of information technology and reduced price of communication products, the mobile phone has become a necessity for most people. Obviously, it shortens the distance between people and makes our life more convenient. Thanks to it, it’s easy for us to contact or be contacted by others anytime and anywhere. We will never miss any important meetings, great deals or admirable opportunities.
However, have you noticed sometimes the mobile phone also brings embarrassment to us? It’s not rare to see someone pressing the mobile phone to his ear and shouting loudly in public as if there were no one else present. And I’m sure each one has had such an experience that the mobile phones ring continuously on a formal
occasion. Perhaps these people have many life-and-death reasons to keep the phone working at all times, but it interrupts people around them who have to hear what they don’t care when they want to concentrate on what they’re doing.
So if you are one of them, please turn off your mobile phone in public, especially on a quiet and serious occasion. It’s a respect for both others and yourself. 3. Writing (30 minutes)

Choose a Good Major or a Good University
Every student will face the same question when he/she passes the College Entrance Examination: Should he/she choose a good major or a good university? Different people will offer different answers.
Some students give priority to a good major. What they cherish is a specialty they like most. I their mind, whether the university is famous is not very important — so long as he works hard, he can learn it well in any university, and a bright future is awaiting him. Other students pay more attention to the university. They attach great importance to the university because the environment is vital to the making of an excellent person and is the symbol of a good future job itself. How can you have a wide vision and a broad horizon if you receive education in a small college?
In a word, the best choice is a good major at a good university. We can only get such a chance after making great efforts. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major itself.

Directions: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitles “Business Is More Preferable than Teaching”. You should write no less than 150 words and base your composition on the following outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. 现在大学毕业生当教师的越来越少 2. 而选择从商的越来越多
3. 造成这种情况的原因是…… Sample writing
In recent years, many Chinese schools and colleges have been suffering an acute shortage of teaching staff. According to a study, there are 100 candidates
competing for every vacancy in big companies, whereas there is only one applicant for a school where 10 teachers might be needed.
Why do many college graduates prefer going into business to taking a teaching position? Part of the reason is the ever widening pay gap. An official report shows that entry-level salaries for a bank employee or a business executive can be as high as RMB 2000-5000, while the monthly income for a teacher with a master's degree is only about RMB 500. No wonder, college graduates are attracted into more lucrative fields. Actually, the desire they feel for a high salary is as much a desire for success as for comforts a high income can obtain. Working in a big company, a person is provided with ample chances for personal success, and opportunities for expressing his full range of abilities. On the contrary, standing in the classroom, you have no tough responsibilities to be borne, and no critical decision to be made.
Obviously, it is the pursuit of a spiritual as well as material life that accounts mainly for college graduates' preference for business over teaching.

Road Accidents Road accidents are the serious problems of our times. Every day there are far too many people killed or injured on the roads. One wonders who are most to blame: the drivers or the pedestrians (行人).
For some accidents, the drivers are to blame. They sometimes drive too fast and show no consideration for others. They think they are safe at the wheel even though they have drunk too much alcohol. Some drivers are unaware that their carelessness may have fatal consequences.
For some accidents, the blame must be put on the pedestrians. Some careless pedestrians step off the pavement without first looking to the left or right. Some even cross roads when the traffic lights are against them. There are some pedestrians who are rash enough to dash across the road in front of an approaching truck.
To reduce road accidents, both drivers and pedestrians should observe traffic regulations and be more careful.

1. There are many arguments about the advantages of examination.
2. For both examiners and examinees, the examination can show what and how much the exam needs have mastered.
3. In sum, the examination does more good than harm for both examiners and examinees. Sample writing
EXAMINATION
There are many arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of examination. Some people think examination is the only best way to test how examinees have mastered what they have studied and it is the only measurement for examiners to select which persons they need. While, on the other hand, some object that examination can't measure how the students have really studied. They say it can do nothing but burden the students.
As for me, I think for both examiners and examinees, the examination can show what and how much the examinees have mastered. The results of examinations are just like mirrors for both examiners and examinees. Through examination the examinees can check their work and get aware of which aspects they have not done well, so that they'll make much improvement in their work. As far as examinees are concerned, they can not only know how they have studied but also find out what they still unknown or what they haven't mastered well. Thus, they will be inspired to greater efforts to improve their studying method so as to make greater progress. Of course too many examinations are burdens to both examiners and examinees. In sum, the examination does more good than harm for both examiners and examinees. We must take a correct attitude towards examination. We should take full advantage of it and avoid its disadvantage.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Ambition. Your essay should be no less than 150 words following the outline given below in English. Remember to write clearly. 1. Great ambition and great action make a great man. 2. What is ambition? 3. What is action?
4. Ambition and action are inseparable. Sample writing
Ambition
Great ambition and great action make a great man. They're inseparable. Great ambition leads to Chichester's sailing around the world and the Apollo Project which enabled men to land on the moon, but without action, these feats would have remained grandiose dreams. Great action led Columbus to America and Kepler to discover the threes laws of the planets, yet had it not been for the great goals, these projects would probably have been canceled halfway.
Ambition includes not only the pursuit of fame and fortune, but also the pursuit of one's own value, the well-being of others and the knowledge about the universe. Ambition gives a man the hope to live on and the power to push on, and propels him to a higher stage of life. But if you have your ambition and say to yourself that you have a bright future in front of you, but you never carry out any plans, you've failed. You're waiting for a better chance to come. You're waiting for tomorrow. Finally you get nothing. So, one shouldn't sit back and wait. It is important to take action when one is young.
Action refers not just to great discoveries and distinguished achievements, but also to those so-called trifles you do everyday. Boring as those trifles may be, they are steps to success. But if you are excessively absorbed in these trifles, you will miss the point. You work hard and persevere everyday, yet you don't know clearly what you're working so hard for. You should slow down to ponder over your goals, to fan the spark of your ambition. Don't leave behind your ambition because you're too busy with trifles.
Ambition and action are the things you should always keep in mind. Think of them as inseparable parts of an engineer.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Physical Exercise and Mental Advantage. You should write at least 150 words according to the outline given below in English. Remember to write clearly. 1. Physical exercise develops will.
2. Physical exercise develops judgment.
3. Physical exercise develops self-confidence. 4. Conclusion.
Sample writing
Physical Exercise and Mental Advantage Physical exercise develops will. Nobody can succeed in anything if he does not put his will into it. A man, who wishes to life 300 pounds, can do it, if he has a strong will. Some long-distance runners win after practicing day after day, year after year. A great many athletes get good reputations through nothing but a strong will which helps them realize their goals.
Physical exercise develops judgment. There are many people who are unable to make decisions when matters come to them. This is due to the fact that their judgment is not sound. An expert runner knows when he should run faster and when slower. A table tennis player can use different strategies to defeat his opponent.
Physical exercise develops self-confidence. Many persons do not trust themselves. As things come before them, they usually hesitate, not knowing whether or not they have the ability to perform them. So a great deal of time is usually wasted and matters are left unattended. This is because these people have no self-confidence. An expert athlete believes that he has had great ability in a certain sport and that he can compete with others in that sport. He does not hesitate and try his best to win the championship.
Thus we see will, judgment and self-confidence can be developed by physical exercises.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to study the following bar graph carefully and write an essay entitled “China’s Tariff after Entering WTO”. Your essay should cover the following points and should be no less than 150 words. Remember to write clearly.
1. Analyze the information given in the graph.
2. State your comments on the graph and your conclusion.
Sample writing
China’s Tariff after Entering WTO
The year 2001 witnessed China's entry into WTO. This is a great event for our country. But we are now faced with lots of changes, especially the ones in our economic life. Closely related to these changes is the expected reduction of tariffs on
imported automobiles and farm produce. The above graph shows this change ranging from 2002 to 2008.
Imported goods will not become exempt from tariffs overnight. As seen from the graph, reduction of tariffs on automobiles is expected to be greater than that on farm produce. The year of 2002 may see a 10% decrease of tariff and 2004 may witness an accumulative fall to 30%. The figure is to reach 45% in 2006 and the tariff is projected to level off to the international standard in 10 years. With regards to farm produce, an agreement between China and other WTO member countries provides a 7% decline in customs duty for the years between 2000 and 2002. And China has successfully bargained an average reduction of less than 10% in each of the successive years.
This gradual reduction is really what China needs. As China is still a developing country, an abrupt elimination or drastic drop of tariff will bankrupt many young industries. And the comparatively modest fall of farm produce tariffs is a smart deal. China is an agricultural power, with more than 80% of farmers feeding the largest population in the world, and it cannot afford to take risks in this filed.

Investment in Wuhan from Different Countries and Regions
Wuhan is a large and developing country, it has so massive potential that many countries and regions have been attracted to invest here. From this pie chart, we can see that the investment in Wuhan comes from 26 different countries and regions. Nearly half of the investment is from Hong Kong, that’s forty-four percent of the
totals. The investment from Japan comes second, taking up nineteen point two percent and sixteen percent from America, the rest is from the other 23 countries.
There is no doubt that Wuhan benefits a lot from the outside investment. In the first place, a large number of joint ventures have been set up, which contributes greatly to the development of economy. Secondly, the foreign-invested enterprises offer a lot of jobs to the residents in Wuhan. This in turn relieves the problem of laid-off workers in the city.
Since investment can bring about so many benefits, how can a city attract more investment, such as to better the investment environment, to lower taxes, to beatify the surroundings in the city, and more importantly, to improve people’s quality by all means. People’s high quality is a key factor in attracting foreign investment. It is the duty of everyone of us living in Wuhan. So from now on, let’s do it from ourselves. 11. Writing (30 minutes)

You always found just the right way of showing me with those wonderful stories of yours the importance of telling the truth, of sharing and forgiving, of being considerate of others. Simply, you sprinkled my life with stardust. Thank you.
Not many are as lucky in their parents as I am. The best way that I can repay you is to study hard at college. I’ll try my best to become one of the top students in my class.

Dear Dr. Li,
In searching for employment opportunities on the Internet, I learned of a job vacancy in the Public Affairs Reporting Section of your newspaper. I believe that my qualifications match the requirements you have listed for the position.
As a journalism major at Xuan Wu University in Nanjing, my academic training has enabled me to develop my writing and editing skills, particularly in the reporting of public affairs. At college, English, Reporting Public Affairs, Advertising and Public Relations have been my favorite subjects. I would like to utilize my interests and training to the fullest through working on a newspaper as well-known as your own.
My resume reflects my experience as a journalistic intern with two newspapers in Nanjing. While working there I did both research work and reporting. I greatly enjoyed work as a professional reporter and the challenge of writing to deadlines, all of which I successfully met.
I have won several awards for my journalistic work and was admitted to the Journalists’ Association fo Jiangsu Province last year. I was the vice chairman of the Students’ Union in my university for two years. The enclosed resume provides further information about my experience and background.
I wonder if it would be possible for us to meet one of these days so that you could learn more about me and I could find out more about the specifics of the job. Please call me anytime on (025)9709399 Monday through Friday. Thank you for your time and consideration.
