With the increasing access to the Internet and soaring popularity of distance learning, many people begin to choose to study online for diplomas rather than go to universities. An argument accordingly arose, that is, is the Internet going to replace universities? From my point of view, universities cannot be replaced by the Internet.
First, although the existence of the Internet has changed the way people read and write and made the diversified learning material and methods come true, it is not able to take the place of books and teachers, which are indispensable to higher education. Traditional education in universities will still be in the dominant position. Second, university life is essential for college students to enhance their abilities of communication and social adaptability, besides acquiring knowledge and skills. Last but not least, it is only under the standard university management system that the check and evaluation of students' achievement can be guaranteed.
In conclusion, the Internet will not be a rival of universities; instead, it will become a helpful supplement to traditional education. With the Internet service, university life will be significantly enriched.
Topic 2: Building a Factory in a Community
Should It Be Welcomed or Rejected? It is reported that a new factory will be built in our community. This has caused much dispute among the residents. Some people welcome the plan, regarding it as a stimulus for the economy. They say the new factory will provide new jobs for the residents, and it will help improve its infrastructure. However, (for my part/from my own perspective) I agree with the opposite opinion, that is, such a factory should be rejected in the community. incentive
To begin with, the factory will certainly bring much pollution to the environment. The machines will cause much noise, and will produce much waste water and poisonous gas. All these will affect our health. In addition, with the factory in the area, the community may become less pleasant to live in. We will miss our present peace and quiet that is so valuable these days, and the coming traffic jam will decrease the value of our apartments.
In a word, I think/hold the view that/take the attitude that the disadvantages of building a factory are far greater than the advantages. All residents in the community should rise to reject the plan.
Topic 3: Work in the Countryside
Many university graduates now volunteer to work in the countryside. It is reported that once hundreds of university graduates competed with one another to work as a village leader in Beijing.
Many factors have contributed to this phenomenon. First, with more and more university students graduating each year, the job market competition becomes increasingly fierce, and many graduates cannot find jobs in the cities. Working in the countryside is better than being jobless. Second, the villages that are trying to employ university graduates are generally in the rich areas of the country, which makes working there an attractive choice. Third, some university graduates, being from the countryside, are eager to go back home to contribute to the construction of their hometown. With their knowledge and enthusiasm, they will play an important role in building the new countryside.
Personally, I think university graduates should go to work where they are needed most and where they can make full use of their talents. Working in the countryside can be truly an advisable choice.
Topic 4: Need We \"Never Give Up\"?
When Wallace watched the spider fail six times in spinning a web and succeed at the seventh time, he realized that he should lead his Scottish people to fight against the English invaders for another time, and he, too, succeeded. Whenever we face some difficulties or suffer setbacks in our projects, we can always gain strength from the popular saying: \"Never give up!\" But need we never give up? Apparently, there are always goals we can never achieve. However hard we tried, we could not win the top prize in every contest; whatever treatment used, we may fail to lengthen the life of someone beloved. There are always frustrations, and some are just beyond us. It is thus wise to accept the reality, i.e. to give up sometimes. As college students, we need the saying \"Never give up\" to keep us going. But we also need to learn to come to terms with reality. When occasionally I heard news about some college students committing suicide, I said to myself, \"If only they had learned to give up!\"
Topic 5: On Opening Psychological Courses
Many universities and colleges have now decided to open more psychological courses to their students. This is totally advisable and has been warmly welcomed. In the first place, psychological courses are in urgent need in colleges and universities. Today's students are under tremendous pressures. They have economical and academic pressures, and pressures coming from interpersonal relations as well.
These pressures may bring them anxiety, depression and despair. Some students even committed suicide for these pressures. The psychological courses may teach them how to deal with pressures, and thus can be very good for the students' mental health. In the second place, such courses may help students deal with problems in the future and are therefore beneficial to the whole society. The courses teach students how to regulate feelings and emotions in different situations, which can be of great use when they graduate and go to work. As for me, I think it's a wise idea to open more psychological courses to the students.
Topic 6: Should We Help Strangers?
Helping strangers has always been considered a treasured virtue of human kind, not only because we need help from others throughout all our life, but also because it brings us tremendous/enormous/gigantic happiness.
However, some consider that helping others can sometimes put us to trouble. Because there are cheats who take advantage of our sympathy, and sometimes we are not able to provide the help needed, if we cannot swim, it is dangerous to help someone being drowned.
In my opinion, we should still try our best to help strangers. On the one hand, everybody needs help from others. No matter when one travels to other places or stays at home, it is hard to imagine how a man can live without the help of strangers, because nearly everything he uses is made by others. On the other hand, we take delight in helping others. We feel great joy when we are trusted and needed by others.
In a word, I contend that we should help others. At the same time, we should also learn to protect ourselves from being harmed.
Topic 7: The Postgraduate Craze
Presently, there is a so-called \"postgraduate craze\" in China. Millions of people, most of whom are university students, take part in the yearly postgraduate entrance examination. Recently,
They do so for different reasons. First of all, the fierce competition in the job market suggests that many university students will be jobless when they graduate. Postgraduate study will not only enable them to stay away from the pressure of the job market for a couple of years, but it can also make them better prepared for their future career. Secondly, more and more people realize the importance of updating their knowledge in the age of information explosion. Many people, though with decent jobs and high incomes, are eager to go back to school and undertake postgraduate studies. Lastly, many people are not satisfied with their present jobs and they hope postgraduate studies will bring them opportunities to improve their social status and living conditions.
The postgraduate craze reflects many social problems. I think both the government and all universities must get prepared for its future impact.
Topic 8: Should Old People Stay at Home or Be Placed in Nursing
Homes?
Should old people stay with their children or go to the nursing homes? Some hold that old people should stay at home. For one thing, the young are obliged to repay the care and love they once received from the old. For another, the old may help with some housework and gain a sense of achievement, which is important for their mental and physical health. Finally, when the old live with the young, they may find it easier to catch up with new ideas.
By contrast, some argue that old people should be placed in nursing homes, where they can not only have opportunities to communicate and have fun with their peers, but also be treated by professional doctors and nurses. Furthermore, with the old staying in nursing homes, the young may have more time and energy to devote to their own careers.
In my view, the decision should be made with all factors fully considered. Above all, the opinion of the old should be respected. They themselves should be the ones who make the decision, not the young.
Topic 9: A Letter to Apply for a Student Loan Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a freshman in Peking University majoring in Civil Engineering. I am applying to your bank for a loan of 10,000 yuan.
It is hard for me to make the application, but I have to. Last year both my parents were laid off, and to make matters worse, three months ago my mother was discovered to have caught a serious disease. Therefore, I could not get support for my study from my family any more. But I treasure the opportunity to go to college very much, and I have no choice but to ask for your help.
If the application is approved, all the money will go to my tuition and fees for the next two years. I guarantee to repay the loan within five years, that is, one year after my graduation. Attached are documents confirming my statements.
I would be greatly obliged if my application is granted.
Many thanks. Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
Topic 10: Should a Formal Distance Be Kept Between Students and
Teachers?
A good interpersonal relationship between teachers and students is vital for successful education. And what is a perfect teacher-student relationship like? Should there be a formal distance between them?
The question has aroused much interest. For some, teachers and students should be friends, and there should be little distance between them. The teacher enjoys being treated as a friend by the student, and the student likes confiding in the teacher. Such a relationship is treasured especially by teenagers who are eager to grow up. However, others hold that there should always be a formal distance between the teacher and the student. They argue that only when the teacher keeps a distance from the student can he make fair judgments about all the students and avoid prejudice.
In my opinion, the distance between the teacher and the student can best be adjusted according to the specific situation. There is no need to regulate a set distance between the two.
City problem
Nowadays, we have to face the fact that millions of migrant workers flood into big cities in search of jobs and better living. However, it is common that many problems
We should take effective measures to solve the existing problems and to prevent the potential ones appearing and becoming serious social matters.
So from the analysis above, we can predict that the number of individuals touring overseas will boost, and related business, such as travel agency, transportation, hotel, restaurant, will continue to reap profits from it. There has been a heated discussion among the general public about whether we should celebrate these western festivals. As far as I am concerned, it can enhance the understanding between the eastern and western cultures, but at the same time, we should also give priority to our festivals because they play crucial roles in Chinese traditional culture.
As for me, I insist that it is high time that measures were taken to eliminate the demerits.
Good health
Good health has been universally acknowledged as great wealth. And the possession of good health is regarded by nearly everyone as essential to having a happy life as well as a successful one. Only if you are in good shape can you expect to live comfortably or work effectively. On the contrary, without good health, however ambitions and promising you are, you will eventually turn out to be a failure in your life.
Then, how can you stay healthy? Firstly, spending adequate time doing physical exercise is necessary. Secondly, habits that threaten your health must be abandoned, such as smoking and drinking too much alcohol. Finally, you must have regular physical check-ups. Whenever you are founded to have a disease, you should have it treated promptly.
As for me, I pay much attention to physical exercise. I’m also careful with my diet. I believe that regular exercise and eating nutritious food ensure a healthy body. In a word, keeping healthy is not very hard if we just take it seriously.
How to solve the environment problem
As is known to all, environmental protection has become highly debated topic throughout the word, for every country, to some extent, is threatened by the increasingly worsening environment. Taking into account various reasons that can lead to deterioration of our surrounding, we can find some solution.
In the first place, it is believed that technology impose a harmful influence on environment. Though technology allows us to enjoy much convenience and comfort, it has not become so advanced that it dose not cause side effects. Therefore, further progress and research should be made to invent new environment-friendly products to reduce the side effects caused by those facilities and equipment.
In the second place, human beings should become aware of rapid exhaustion of the earth’s natural resource, for instance, coal and gasoline are unrenewable resource. It is wise for us to use natural resources in a proper way and it is surely a sin to make profit at the expense of the long term interests of future generations. In addition, to develop new, clean and renewable energy source would be a beneficial contribution.
At last, the government has to make certain laws to ensure environmental protection and public should raise their environmental awareness. If all members of society are highly devoted to this issue, we may still have a promising future.
Man is confronted with more problems than ever that threaten man’s survival on the earth. Natural resource will soon be exhausted. Many diseases can’t be cured. And according to some studies, the problems of population become increasingly worse.
Therefore, some people wonder whether man can survive an in the future. We are running out of resources. We are suffering from incurable diseases. Due to pollution, we will not have the pure water and fresh air that are indispensable to our lives. As the globe is getting more crowed, pollution becomes a constant headache. The worst prediction of some people is that man will die out in the near future.
Of course, they are somewhat exaggerating. But the situation is grave. We must try our best to make the word a better place for us to live. We can use solar energy to replace the energy sources used today. Equipped with advanced technology, we can also find new methods to improve people’s health. And new measures can be taken to prevent pollution and control the population.
To sum up, we should face these challenges bravely instead of being anxious. What matters most is that we must take action to make the situation better.
The courses of human development can be considered as a long process of learning to control the environment. We have learn to produce a constant food supply though farming, to regulate the temperature through use of clothing, to build shelters that can withstand even the greatest extremes in the weather. All these give us a seemingly right impression that human beings have already become the masters of this world.
However, as we often regarded the world as an opponent to be conquered, dominated, and exploited, we change the environment to gratify our needs and desires, and consequently, the fragile balance of nature is destroyed. Unfortunately, there are too many people eager to continue this battle with our earth. If the population were small, our impact would not be that important. But with the large population of this world, the tremendous impact should not be ignored.
Today, many plants and animals are near extinction. The food chain is destroyed. If we had tried to live harmoniously with the environment in the past, it would not be in danger today. If we continue to use the environment in an improper way, we will definitely ruin it in the near future.
Where to live – in the city or country?
Many people appreciate the conveniences of the city. With better transportation service and health care, city dwellers can easily enjoy themselves in restaurants, department stores and entertainment places. They are well-informed about what is going on both at home and abroad, and have the access to better education, better jobs and more opportunities for success.
But country life is also attractive. With fresh air, green trees and singing birds, country people are closer to nature and live a quiet life in tranquility. They can make friends with simple and honest men and women in the neighborhood or wander about leisurely without suffering any pressure.
Both the city and the country, however, have their own shortcomings. The city has such annoying problems as heavy traffic, air pollution, noises and poor housing conditions. And in the country, educational facilities, medical services and transportation systems are still not fully developed.
As far as I am concerned, I dislike the hustle and bustle of city. So given the chance, I would rather live peacefully in the country.
Which to prefer – private cars or public transportation?
Many people appreciate the convenience of private cars. A private car can bring comfort and mobility and enables a person to go nearly everywhere whenever he wants to go. Therefore, he can enjoy his leisure fully by making trips to the rural areas or the seaside on the weekends, without any irritation caused by waiting for buses or trains. And this convenience becomes more apparent when emergencies happen.
But public transportation also has its merits. With someone else driving for us, we will feel relaxed and enjoy music on a bus or subway, which is never allowed if we ourselves drive. What’s more, public transportation helps to lessen air pollution and traffic jams.
Both private cars and public transportation, however, have their own drawbacks. Actually a private car makes the environmental problem more serious due to too much harmful carbon monoxide emitted. It also often causes traffic jams in and around the city. And the bus system dose not provide frequent stops and sometimes it will take us a lot of time to get to even the nearest bus stops.
As far as I am concerned, I dislike the air pollution and traffic jams caused by private cars. So, given the chance, I would prefer public transportation.
For a better understanding between consumers and manufacturers Recently, there is often a lack of mutual understanding between consumers and manufacturers.
Consumers often complain that the quality of
products is unworthy of their money, while in the eyes of manufactures, consumers are too overcritical. Then, when a purchased product proves to be dissatisfactory, lots of sophisticated arguments from both sides often arise, leaving no room for them to compromise.
There are several possible
reasons for the present situation. Firstly, the profit-driven manufacturers, in order to make a higher profit, resort to making empty promises, claiming their products to be of the best quality and the lowest price. Secondly, consumers, unwilling to accept any “loss”, complain that they are cheated even when a newly-brought item is found defective due to their misuse. Finally, both consumers and manufacturers are too impatient to listen. To bridge this so-called gap between the two sides, personally, I hold that both sides should bear the responsibility. The manufacturer should be honest when providing information of the quality and function of a product. The consumer, on the other hand, should not expect too much from the manufacturer; it’s very rare, anyway, for one to come to across an item that is both the cheapest and of the best quality. As for their respective interests, both sides should put themselves into other’s shoes. If the take the first step by trying to be responsible and considerate, it won’t be long before the arrival of a better understanding between consumers and manufacturers.
Peace and development are the themes of times. People across the world should join hands in advancing the lofty cause of peace and development of mankind.
A peaceful environment is indispensable for national, regional and even global development. Without peace or political stability there would be no economic progress to speak of. This has been fully proved by both the past and the present.
In today’s word, the international situation is, on the whole, moving towards relaxation. However, conflicts and even local wars triggered by various factors have kept copping up, and tension still remains in some areas.
From what has been discussed above / taking all the evidence offered into account/consideration, we can draw the conclusion that…
Judging from all the evidence offered, we may safely come to the conclusion that…
It is quite necessary that effective measures should be taken to change the situation.
In the recent years, the fact that the study of Chinese is widely ignored has become increasingly severe. This problem is attaching to our attention.
There are many reasons accounting for this phenomenon, but an important reason is that Chinese is studied unnecessary in many universities. Therefore, it causes that many students learn Chinese only to get into university. As long as they get into university, most of them give up the study of Chinese. If you have a good Chinese, you can do better in the interview of job, and write a better resume. But you haven’t it, these couldn’t come true.
In order to solve this problem, there are some immediate and effective actions should be taken.
It is quite necessary that effective actions should be taken to change the situation. From my perspective, in the first place, Chinese should be treated as well as English in the university. The awareness of studying Chinese should be enhanced. In the second place, it is necessary to make a lot of courses study Chinese, and hold some match of Chinese. Anyway, we have responsibility to study it well. It is unreasonable to have a bad mother language.
No one, regardless of race, religion or nationality, can deny that the world we live in is becoming increasingly intolerable because of the effects of global warming. According to many experts, even greater impacts are still on the way.
There are numerous causes for this problem. On the one hand, human-related emission of carbon into the atmosphere is causing, and will in the future cause, significant global warming according to the theory. On the other hand, the lack of knowledge about the importance of protecting environment hinders the solving of the problem.
It is urgent that immediate and effective actions should be taken right away. First, more trees need to be planted to help improve the environment. Besides, stricter laws concerning global warming and irresponsible use of fuel resources have to put into effect. In a word, there is a long way to go before we can take a comfortable world for granted again.
There has been a heated discussion over the growing income gap now. Some people hold that the gap is natural because it reflects different contributions that different people make in their work. In their views, those people with high income work hard and long. Besides, these people bring high efficiency, and create more wealth. Accordingly, they deserve high pay.
On the other hand, there are always some people who view this gap negatively. They believe that a lot of crimes happen as a result of this income gap. Some people makes so little from their work that they risk taking criminal acts to get rich. In fact, experts have long found out that most cases of crime are directly related to low income. There is another point to back up a negative view against income gap. For most people, income gap may destroy the satisfaction that they obtain from work.
As anything has two sides, so has the problem of income gap. Personally, I believe that this gap may motivate people to compete better in job market. When this is growing too wide, however, our government should make some policies to get rid of its negative consequences.
If asked whether the internet is the greatest discovery of the 20th century, my answer would be yes. The Internet has drawn the world closer together, realized countless incredible dreams, and provides modern people with a great many conveniences and a brilliant life.
Today, many people simply feel they cannot live without the internet. Governments publish their latest policies and decisions online for worldwide recognition. Political campaigns are often done online to gain wider public support. Companies and enterprises resort to Internet for more business opportunities and potential customers home and abroad. Universities and researchers turn to the Internet if they’d seek international cooperation or funding. Common folks like us also rely on the cyber world in various ways, for communication, entertainment, banking and shopping.
True, the power of internet is all pervasive and its many negative effects are already visible. For example, Internet addicts tend to withdraw to their own fantasy world rather than communicate with a real person. Children are exposed to online pornography and violence. Internet frauds are an everyday occurrence. In view of all this, you are advised to use the Internet with wisdom. Keep it at a safe distance and never lose yourself.
Appreciated obtain bring benefits to
In my opinion, it is more important to take measures to avoid such occurrences
In order to make our world be a better place to live in, we should combine our efforts to
Finally, to speak frankly, there is also a practical reason why I would choose to
Taking into account all these factors, we may safely reach the conclusion that
With the efforts of all parts concerned, the problem will be solved thoroughly.
In summary, if we continue to ignore the above-mentioned issue, more problems will crop up.
But all in all, I world say the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. With the advance of society, if we encourage the merits and eliminate the drawbacks, all people will enjoy a better life.
As far as I am concerned, its advantages
The issue whether it is good or not to…has aroused a heated argument all over the country.
To this issue, different people come up with various attitudes.
