Being a member of the US Congress is one of our nation’s most important jobs. These elected officials meet in Washington, DC,to make America’s laws. But for our government’s first 128 years, all of these lawmakers were men.

In 1917, a woman named Jeannette Rankin changed that. She became the first woman to serve in Congress.

At the time Rankin was elected, most women didn’t even have the right to vote. The US government didn’t entitle women across the country this right until 1920. But Ranking home state, Montana, was one of a few states that let women vote sooner. Rankin and others there convinced state officials to let women vote in 1914. Two years later, Rankin ran for Congress. Both men and women in Montana voted for her, and she won.

Congress is made up of two parts一the House of Representatives and the Senate. Rankin represented her state in the House of Representatives from 1917 to 1919. She was elected to a second term in 1940.

When Rankin was elected, she said, “I may be the first woman member of Congress, but I won’t be the last.” She was right. Before long, other women followed her footsteps. Today, 104 of Congress’s 535 members are women.

US Representative Grace Meng of New York is one of those women. She says that while there are more women in Congress, there’s still more work to do. Even though half of the US population is female, women still make up less than a quarter of Congress. Meng hopes Rankin’s story will inspire more girls to think about careers in government. “I want all kids﹣boys or girls﹣to know that the sky’s limit,” she says. “You can do anything!”

When you need a quiet space to focus, where do you go? Perhaps you retreat into the comfort of your bedroom, find a spot under a willowy tree or head to the library where silence is strictly enforced.

For animals in national parks all over the United States, noise pollution is now a cause of worry as it is affecting the fragile ecosystems. And, the biggest cause of this pollution﹣none other than humans themselves!

Noise pollution in nature can come from many sources﹣from the sound of a car, to planes in the sky, as well as shrieks and laughter from excited hikers.

In a study, National Park Service scientists compiled data from more than 400 sites all over the country. The first step was to set up listening stations in different geographic areas, to record and measure sounds. These stations were set up for a month, and the results were then handed to acoustic specialists to identify the sources of different sounds. The way scientists determined noise pollution in an area was simple almost like a math

problem! All they had to do was to subtract out the “natural sounds” pinpointed by acoustic specialists. In 63% of protected areas which are home to endangered species, scientists

observed an increase of 3 decibels. In more than one in five protected areas, an extra 10 decibels of noise pollution from humans was recorded.

Noise pollution can mean the difference between life and death for animals that rely on sounds to capture their prey, or in other cases, run from it. When an animal hears a foreign sound they might have never heard before, they are certain to react differently. Even plants are affected as unnatural sounds chase away the animals and birds that pollinate (给…授粉)the plants. Some birds have to sing at night over the day so that their voices can be heard. Scientists have observed a higher pitch in male frogs, which in turn reduces their chances of reproduction,as the female frogs prefer a lower pitch.

In order to combat noise pollution, various ideas from shuttles within national parks to a simple “quiet” sign have been enacted. By reducing noise pollution, you are not only conserving the fragile ecosystem, but also preserving the beauty of nature﹣so howls, squawks and the gentle swish of the wind are the only sounds you hear in the wild.

There are many countries in the continent of Europe. My family and I went for one week last fall, and we were shocked at how beautiful it was.

The first two days we spent in Austria were at the White Horse Inn in St. Wolfgang, right on the St. Wolfgang Lake. If you’re looking for some relaxation, this is the perfect destination. I was in heaven swimming in their indoor pool and using the downstairs

spa. Even if it was freezing outside, I actually got a chance to swim in the outside heated pool, which is located eye﹣level with the lake so you feel like you’re in that and not the pool. I actually felt as if I were in paradise!

Anyway, the first morning we woke up in St. Wolfgang, I enjoyed a treat﹣the White Horse Inn always provides a large buffet breakfast for the whole family! Spreads, crepes, meats, eggs, and fresh﹣squeezed orange juice were laid out in front of our eyes, and everything tasted amazing. That day we actually ventured away from the hotel and into the town, where adorable, little tourist shops lined the streets, as well as bakeries and things to do for the whole family.

So I have to say, St. Wolfgang really pleased us. But now it was time to move on and take the train to Salzburg!

The first time I spotted Salzburg, it gave me a small flashback to Rome﹣﹣most areas were very touristy, but some designated places were less crowded and actually really beautiful. The first touristy activity we did was visit Mozart’s home. I have to say it was amazingly fascinating, and I learned a lot from the trip. That afternoon we loved eating at this touristy yet charming cafe called “Nordsee”(Northsea), which serves delicious buffets, usually consisting of a big piece of fish as well as veggies and dessert.

Overall, my family and I really enjoyed Austria, and I definitely recommend visiting the country and city parts, as both are different in their own ways. Hopefully I’ll be able to visit them again, but if not, the memories I gained will stick in my head forever.

Most of the energy that we use for electricity comes from fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas.

Unfortunately, the enormous amount of energy we consume every day has depleted (耗

尽)these nonrenewable natural resources.

As most electrical facilities and appliances rely on these natural resources, researchers have been looking for alternative ways to supply renewable energy﹣energy that will not run out. The more common sources are nuclear, solar, wind, biodiesel, etc., but even these have their own disadvantages.

Now, there is a possible new source of energy that is similar to the commonly﹣used coal, oil, and natural gas﹣flammable (易燃的)ice. Flammable ice looks like ice and bums like a fossil fuel. But how?

Flammable ice consists of natural gas trapped inside water molecules. When set to flame, the gas in the ice will catch fire, giving it the name “fire ice” or “flammable ice”. Scientists in China have discovered a way to extract gas out of flammable ice, a breakthrough that could impact the global energy problems.

Flammable ice is officially known as a methane hydrate﹣a combination of water and

methane (甲烷)gas. Under low temperatures and high pressure, methane produced from organic matter is pressed down and trapped by water molecules in the sea. If conditions are right, ice will form around this methane, creating flammable ice.

China has a large reserve of flammable ice in the South China Sea which was discovered back in 2007. Now with this recent discovery, tons of natural gas can be extracted from this flammable ice for future energy demands. For countries that are not major producers of oil and natural gas, flammable ice is certainly an option of energy that they can use. Unfortunately, fire ice also has its disadvantages. Fire ice is still a fossil fuel and emits greenhouse gases, like natural gas. Also, it is extremely difficult and quite expensive to extract methane hydrate from the ocean floors﹣ careful attention is needed to prevent leakage of methane into the atmosphere. Similar to carbon dioxide, methane also traps heat, so the more methane is released, the more heat is added to our problems of global warming.

As long as utmost care is taken to control the use of fire ice, flammable ice could play a huge part in how we consume energy in the future.

On a hot August day in 1958, 7﹣year﹣old Ayanna Najuma and her friends walked into Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They sat down at the lunch counter and tried to order food, but the waitresses ignored them. The kids sat there for hours. No one would wait on Ayanna and her friends for one reason: They were African﹣Americans. This was one of many restaurants in the South that refused to serve black people at the time.

Growing up, Ayanna was used to the unjust treatment of black people. Even after slavery was banned in the US in 1865, other forms of racism continued. African﹣Americans were still treated cruelly. One example of this mistreatment was segregation. Such forms of mistreatment were common, and legal, in many states, especially in the South. But in 1958, while on a bus trip to New York City, Ayanna and her friends noticed that life was different for black people in the North. Black people and white people ate at the same restaurants and lived in the same neighborhoods.

The kids wanted Oklahoma City to be more like New York City, so they decided to do something about it. Many Americans took similar actions against racism in the 1950s and 1960s.

On the first day of the sit﹣in, Ayanna and the other kids sat at the lunch counter until the restaurant closed for the night. No one ever took their order. So the kids went back the next day. That’s when the situation grew tense. Some white customers yelled at the kids, and others threw ketchup on them. Through it all, the kids remained peaceful and polite. During the third day of their sit﹣in, the kids got good news. The owners of the store agreed to start serving black customers at the lunch counter.

Ayanna and her friends weren’t done, though. For six years, they took part in sit﹣ins at other restaurants in Oklahoma. One by one, many of the restaurants became integrated. Their last sit﹣in took place in 19. That same year, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. The law made segregation illegal throughout the US. Ayanna and the other kids were proud to do their part to bring about change in their hometown﹣and their nation.

“Even though I was little, my voice was just as important as everyone else’s voice,” Ayanna says.
