American gymnast Simone Biles flies through the air as though she were made for it. She has won more world championship gold medals than any other female gymnast in history. She is also the first woman gymnast to win more than three world all-around titles. A complicated flip (空翻) she introduced in the 2013 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships is one of four skills that are named after her, and some consider her the greatest of all time.

Athletes are under pressure, and a small mistake can result in serious injury. At the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, Biles experienced something gymnasts call "the twisties", which means a gymnast has no idea where his or her body is in the air. Instead of putting herself and her team at risk, Biles gave up the competition. However, she worked out in a private gym and was able to compete in the last-scheduled individual event — the balance beam(平衡木), winning the bronze medal.

When she was young, Biles was raised by her grandfather Ron, and was introduced to gymnastics at the age of six on a school field trip to a gym. She saw some gymnasts practicing, began copying their moves and insisted that her parents send her on gymnastics lessons. A coach at the gym also recognized her talent and sent a letter home asking her parents to send her on lessons.

Throughout her career, Biles has kept her passion for the sport, which can be seen clearly in the huge smile she often wears while competing. But she also wants people to know the importance of putting mental health first and not ignoring how stress can influence them.

In Biles’ 2016 memoir (回忆录), she wrote, "How my faith and my family made my wildest dreams come true. And how embracing a dream can give you courage to soar." Biles’ ability to perform at the highest level has inspired new generations of athletes, but her willingness to be honest about her struggles inspires everyone.

24. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about Biles?

A. Her spirit.

B. Her wide fame.

C. Her wonderful skills.

D. Her great achievements.

25. What happened to Biles at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics?

A. She had a hard time.

B. She got a gold medal.

C. She put her team at risk.

D. She was seriously injured.

26. What do we know about Biles from the text?

A. Four skills were named after her in 2013.

B. She has got the most gold medals in history.

C. She showed her talent for gymnastics at an early age.

D. Her grandfather insisted that she take gymnastics lessons.

27. Which of the following can best describe Biles?

A. Determined and generous.

B. Hard-working and curious.

C. Strong-willed and talented.

D. Confident and warm-hearted.

C

Growing pains aren’t a disease. You probably won’t have to go to the doctor for them. But they can hurt. Usually they happen when kids are between the ages of 3 and 5 or 8 and 12. Doctors don’t believe that growing actually causes pains, but growing pains stop when kids stop growing. By the teen years, most kids don’t get growing pains any more.

Kids get growing pains in their legs. Most of the time, they hurt in the front of the thighs (the upper part of your legs), in the calves (the back part of your legs below your knees), or behind the knees. Usually, both legs hurt. Growing pains often start right before bedtime. Sometimes you go to bed without any pains, but you might wake up in the middle of the night with your legs hurting. The best news about growing pains is that they go away by morning.

Growing pains don’t hurt around the bones or joints (the flexible parts that connect bones and let them move) — only in the muscles(肌肉). For this reason, some doctors believe that kids might get growing pains because they’ve tired out their muscles. When you run, climb or jump a lot during the day, you might have pains in your legs at night.

Your parents can help you feel better by giving you an over-the-counter(非处方的) painkilling drugs. Kids should not take aspirin because it can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye’s syndrome (雷耶氏综合征).

Here are three other things that might help you feel better:

(1) placing a heating pad on the spot where your legs hurt;

(2) stretching your legs like you do in gym class;

(3) having your parents massage your legs.

You might never feel any growing pains, but if you do, remember that before you know them, you will outgrow them!

28.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Growing pains are a serious disease which causes much pain.

B. Everyone will experience growing pains from time to time.

C. Growing pains usually only happen during a certain period of one’s life.

D. Doctors strongly suggest kids go to hospital to treat growing pains.

29.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?

A. What growing pains are.

B. When to go to the doctor.

C. What causes growing pains.

D. How to make yourself feel better.

30.Why shouldn’t kids take aspirin to reduce growing pains?

A. Aspirin has no effect on the pains.

B. Aspirin can cause a serious illness.

C. Kids tend to take it more than they should.

D. Other painkilling drugs are much cheaper.

31. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A. To help kids better understand growing pains.

B. To tell parents to pay close attention to growing pains.

C. To advise doctors to give more help to kids with growing pains.

D. To warn kids not to do exercise so as not to tire out their muscles.

Thick snowflakes swirled (打旋) around my car. Everything around me was white. The light was fading as the sun went down.

I was driving up a mountain pass on what was supposed to be a four-hour trip from Red River, New Mexico, to Durango, Colorado. I drove slowly along on a winding, unfamiliar road in a snowstorm. I was on my way to meeting my friend Jane, who was in Durango. I was so excited about the weekend that I left without checking the weather.

Thirty minutes into my drive, the snow had started. Gentle snow at first. I thought about turning around. But it hardly looked threatening, so I continued. Soon I regretted that decision. But it was too late. The road was too narrow and icy for me to turn around. The snow was bad, getting worse. The only way out was forward, higher and higher into the mountains. The last bit of sunlight disappeared, and I couldn’t see anything beyond a few feet lighted by my headlights.

My cell phone lost service as soon as I entered the mountain. I couldn’t call for help. The clothes were in my luggage. Maybe I could find a place to pull over and wear more clothes until morning. Would that be enough to keep me warm all night? How long would it take for someone to find me? "Everything will be fine," I whispered.

Then I noticed a pair of lights seemed to glow dimly (暗淡地) through the snowstorm. I blinked my eyes hard and then looked ahead. There they were. Tail-lights! There was a car in front of me! At least someone was here with me. "Focus on the lights, not your fear," I told myself. I followed my guide for at least another half hour as we continued to pass the mountain.

第四部分 写作

第一节范文

Dear Linda,

How nice to see your post on the Internet! It’s very interesting that you, an American, show so much love for Beijing Opera!

I’d like to be your pen friend, for I’m a senior high school student as you are and I’m crazy about Beijing Opera too. What’s more, my dad is working as an actor in one of the Beijing Opera theaters. He is open-minded as well as easy-going. I’m sure my dad and I can be helpful.

I believe we will have much to share and can get along well with each other.

Please write back as soon as possible so that we can make a plan.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

第二节范文

Paragraph 1:

Finally, I felt the road start to level out (停止升降而保持水平) gradually. I lost sight of the tail-lights ahead of me. But the panic didn’t return. I could see the car’s tire tracks in my headlights. All I had to do was follow the tracks for the rest of the way down the mountain. I drove slowly, keeping my wheels within the tracks every inch of the way. Soon I could see the lights of a town twinkling in the distance. The snow started to cover the tracks I was following. But both of us made it.

Paragraph 2:

At the base of the mountain, I found the tail-lights. As I got closer, I saw it was an SUV. I pulled up beside it and rolled down my window. The driver of the car did the same. "Many thanks. I was really scared on my way. Fortunately, I followed you. It was your car’s light and tracks that gave me hope and encouragement," I said gratefully. The driver looked at me and smiled, "My pleasure. To tell you the truth, I was also fearful, but when I noticed there was a car behind me I felt much better. In fact we were not alone on that mountain road at night."
