A book which is still being discussed by many Americans today is Future Shock by Alvin Toffler. In this book the author describes the great changes which have been made in family life because of science and industry.
In the past, when more Americans lived on farms, the typical(典型的) family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, two uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture(农业) in American life, families became smaller. Industry needs workers who are ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. Large families cannot be moved from one place to place as smaller families can.
Today, because of industrialization(工业化), a typical family will be needed to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and be made up of only a man and a woman. A small number of families may raise children. These families may raise children as their major occupation(职业), leaving the childless families free to move from job to job. Besides, these child-raising families may raise other people’s children in addition to their own.

I suggest we come back by train so we can stop in Wuhan to see my grandmother. When we are back to Beijing, I’d like you to stay for a couple of days with my family for the Spring Festival.
What do you think of my idea? If you have any better suggestions, please let me know.
Best wishes. Yours, Yang Ping

M: I’m afraid so. The boy left some books here and has gone to get his meal. You may take that one. The girl has finished her lunch and left. (Text 3)M: I remember you like beef very much, but today you ate so little. Are you on a diet?
W: No, I’m just full. I already had my lunch before I came here. (Text 4)M: I really wish Tom would take more interest in our business. I don’t know why he wants to become a musician.
W: But Steve, he’s only sixteen, I think he should do what he wants. (Text 5) M: Who’s standing next to you in this picture? W: That’s my brother, Kenny. M: And this one on the right?

W: No, not yet. But I think I’m going to take up singing. M: Any special reasons?
W: Yes. It’s because I’m good at singing. All my classmates say so. Besides, singing is quite interesting and I can meet a lot of people. M: And what do your parents think about it?
W: They don’t quite agree with my idea. That’s the only trouble. M: Yes. I have a similar problem. My parents are trying to send me to
an art college because they want me to be an artist. W: Then what will you do?
M: Well ... I haven’t decided yet. But I usually get my own way in the end.
(Text 7)W: The service is really slow here. I’ve been trying to get the waiter’s attention for ten minutes.
M: I hope he can serve us soon. I’m starving, and I have a class at two o’clock.
W: Me, too. I see that you are holding an English book. You must be a student at the English Language Centre.
M: Yeah, I’m in the fourth course. Are you studying there, too? W: Yes, I’m in the fifth course. I took the fourth course last month. M: I just came here two weeks ago. Do you like the institute? W: It’s pretty good. I think I’ve learned a lot so far.

M: The first thing we ought to do is decide where the bed’s going. W: Oh, well ... what about right here next to the door?
M: Yes, that’s a good idea. Well, there’s that huge wardrobe of yours ... it’s got to go somewhere.
W: What about over there — in that corner? M: OK, we’ll put the wardrobe there then. W: Where are you going to put that desk?
M: Er ... I need lots of light, so I think that far corner between the two windows will be OK.
W: Yes, I see that corner. That should be good. M: And there’s the chest of drawers.
W: Oh, that would be nice in that corner, too.
(Text 9)W: Discoveries is looking for a reporter to travel all around the world and write adventure articles. M: Oh, it’s a good job I think.
W: So you are interested in working for Discoveries?
M: That’s right. I’ve never written a magazine article, but I’m sure I can. I’ve written lots of articles for a newspaper. W: Oh? What newspaper have you written for?
M: Well, so far I’ve sold articles to the Chicago Star and a few other newspapers.
W: Have you ever written an adventure article?
M: No, I haven’t. But I have done some adventurous things to get information for my newspaper articles. W: Tell me about one of them.
M: Well, once I wanted to report on prisons, so I went to a store and stole something. Of course the police came, and I spent ten days in prison. It was horrible. When I got out, I wrote two articles about my experience there. When the public read the articles, they got upset and complained. Since then, the prisons have really been improved. W: That certainly is interesting.
