Cat?sh（鲶鱼 niányú）: The Chinese for \"cat?sh\" sounds like 年余（nián yú）, meaning

\"year surplus\". So eating cat?sh is a wish for a harvest in the year.

Eating two catfish, one on New Year's Eve and one on New Year's Day, (if eaten in a certain way) can mean a wish for more year after year.

If only one cat?sh is eaten, you can eat the upper part of the ?sh on New Year's Eve and have the rest on the ?rst day of the New Year. This would have the same meaning.

The ?sh should be the last dish to be served and you mustn't eat it all. You should leave some left-overs. This is a common tradition in the north of the Yangtze River, but in other areas, the head and tail of the fish shouldn't be eaten until the beginning of the year. This expresses hope that you will have an easy start and have savings at the end of the following year.

Besides this, there are some rules related to the position of the ?sh.

The head should be placed toward most important guests or elders, showing respect. People should enjoy the ?sh, only after the person who faces the ?sh head eats ?rst. The ?sh shouldn't be moved. The two people who face the head and tail of ?sh should drink together, as this is considered to be good luck.
