One day he had an idea. He went around the village with a basket and asked each person to give him some of their wisdom(智慧). The people laughed at Anansi because they knew that he needed wisdom the most. So each person put a little in his basket and wished him good luck.

Soon his basket was full, but Anansi was worried that his neighbors might be jealous(嫉妒)of his wisdom and take it from him. He decided to hide it at the top of a tall tree. When he tied(绑) the basket to the front part of his body, he tried to climb the tree, but it was too difficult. He tried again and again but failed(失败).

Then his youngest son walked by, “What are you doing, father?” he asked and Anansi told him. “Why don’t you carry the basket on your back instead?” his son said.

Anansi put the basket on his back and climbed the tree easily, but he wasn’t happy. “I walked all over the village and collected so much wisdom that I am the wisest person , but my baby son is still wiser than me. Animals can get their food by eating plants and other animals. Man gets his food by eating plants and animals, too. So animals and man need plants to live. This is why there are so many plants around us.

There are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Almost all the trees around us are flowering plants. You can know some trees from their flowers and fruits. Non-flowering plants do not grow flowers. You can’t see many non-flowering plants around you.

If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are many kinds of plants. Some plants are large and some are small. Most of them are green. Thanks to the plants around us, we can live on the earth.

You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.

Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas

(海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.

But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

( )41. “ABCs” in this passage means______________. A. three English letters B. a kind of banana C. Chinese born in America D. Americans born in China

( )42. Chinese in Western countries are called “banana persons” because . A. their bodies are white inside but yellow outside B. they think like Westerners but look like Chinese C. they were born in China but go to study in America D. they like to eat bananas

( )43. The underlined word “blood” may probably mean . A. 洪水 B. 祖先 C. 血统 D. 身份 ( )44. Which of the sentences is WRONG about ABCs? A. They are Chinese citizens. B. They are overseas Chinese. C. They may speak little Chinese. D. ABCs may know little about China. ( )45. This passage mainly talks about . A. different kinds of bananas B. overseas Chinese C. the Nobel Prize D. the story of C.N. A.阅读短文,根据所读内容在短文后图表中的空格里填入恰当的单词。(5分,每空填一个单词) When we talk about how teenagers are getting worse and worse now, most young people don’t agree. Teenagers always say they are growing up. They can have part-time jobs. They can drive cars. And they can even get married when they’re a little bit older.

Their parents say, “Our children are very good. They like pop music, but they play it in their own rooms. They do the housework in the house. You know they feel bored sometimes because there’s nothing interesting in the neighborhood, no clubs, and no sports. They have nothing to do.”

A teacher says that he believes most young people are very kind. He thinks that it’s not bad for young people to like loud music because it can give them lots of energy and make them feel excited. Also, a lot of young people work very hard at school, and they can get good jobs later.

Lewis, a sixteen-year-old boy said, “I have passed all my examinations, but I can’t get a part-time job

because older people always think I’m lazy.”

In my opinion, a lot of teenagers are very kind. They belong to munity work groups. I met an interesting old man at a soccer game. It was on a Saturday morning when the brothers from my host family played soccer against other children.

Bronson,13, and Troy, 12 go to the same school as me. They are in our school’s soccer team. Every weekend they play against teams from other schools.

The soccer field is near our school. The sky was blue and clear. Under the sky there were at least 100 people watching the game. Most of them were parents and friends of the players.

Bronson and Troy’s team wore blue and the other team wore red. A loud whistle(口哨)blew and the game began. As I watched the game, an old man standing next to me said “hello” to me. “Bernard (the father of my host family) was a champion(冠军),” he said.

Bernard does not look like a strong man to me. So I was surprised to hear that he was a champion. The old man said. “Oh, he is the champion of a beer-drinking petition! He who drank the most beer became the winner,” the old man said cheerfully.

Later I found out that the old man is a teacher in my school. And he loves to tell funny jokes. The soccer petition went on for an hour. At last we lost the game. But we all had fun.

1. When did I meet an interesting old man? ___________________________________________ 2. What do Bronson and Troy do every weekend? ___________________________________________ 3. How many people were watching the game? ___________________________________________ 4. Did the brothers enjoy themselves? ___________________________________________ 5. Why was the writer surprised to hear that Bernard was the champion?
