CHARACTER ANALYSIS
1.After six years, she saw him again. He was seated at one of those little bamboo
tables decorated with a Japanese vase of paper daffodils. (P1.Para1)
The flower message of DAFFODILS is narcissism (自恋)and self-absorbing(自我陶醉).
It hints the man was self-engrossed and lived in his own world.
2。Very carefully, in a way she recognized immediately as his \"special\" way, he was
peeling an orange. (P1.Para1)
SPECIAL WAY---------Vera recognized the man immediately because his traditional and unchangeable way of peeling !
From this we can see the man was stiff and obstinate .(刻板的,一成不变的)
3Loathe it.“ She shuddered. ”And the worst of it is that the older one grows . . .
“------- He interrupted her. ”Excuse me,“ and tapped on the table for the waitress……(P1.Para9)
When Vera talked with him about the weather ,he interrupted her and called the waitress for some food .Obviously , he was not interested in her topic and did not care about his ex-girlfriend at all.
It reflects his selfishness ,hypocrisy(虚伪) and indifference. The action of “tapped on the table” shows his arrogance(自大,傲慢). 4He must have made money, too. His clothes were admirable, and at that moment he
pulled a Russian cigarette case out of his pocket. (P2.Para10)
\"I think they are. I get them made for me by a little man in St. James's Street. ……it's a luxury–like perfume.” (P2.Para13)
Admirable clothes and a delicate Russian cigarette case show he attached importance to sensory enjoyment (感官享受)and narcissism(自我陶醉) .Besides he liked to show himself off.
5He gave a strange half laugh and leaned back in his chair. \"Isn't it curious. I have
really carried out all those journeys that we planned...when the war is over.(P3.Para3) He said, \"very wonderful–especially Russia. Russia was all that we had imagined, and far, far more. I even spent some days on a river boat on the Volga. (P3.Para5)
He drew the long bow (夸夸其谈)about his journey in Russia and some other countries. Although he clearly knew Vera was longing to go to Russia. He did not care about Vera’s feelings. It shows his fickle(薄情)and selfishness.
6Your beautiful voice–your beautiful way of speaking .You have only to say one word
and I would know your voice among all other voices. I don't know what it is–I've often wondered–that makes your voice such a–haunting memory. . . (P1.Para14)
What a marvelous listener you are. When you look at me with those wild eyes I feel that I could tell you things that I would never breathe to another human being. (P4.Para4)
These sweet words seem that he still loved Vera .He wanted to show her that he was the only one in the world who loved her ,understood her. She should feel regret to refuse him. Actually he did not pay his true love and always complained .
It shows his irresponsibility, hypocrisy(虚伪)and fickle(薄情). 7.She had remembered a little pot of caviar. It had cost seven and six pence. He
could not get over it…that is eating money. You could not get seven shillings into a little pot that size…(P4.Para7)
\"But the cream has not been touched,\" he said. \"Please do not charge me for it.“(P5.Para13)
A little pot of caviar and cream show his mean ,vanity (虚荣)and selfishness.
8\"The dog was called Bosun,\" she cried delightedly.
But he did not follow. \"Which dog? Had you a dog? I don't remember a dog at all.\" ……(P4.Para9)
Originally ,he pretended to had forgotten the dog. After Vera went on explaining ,he finally remembered it. It seems like he did not care a nut. Actually he held a grudge against (耿耿于怀)her leaving six years ago.
It indicates his insularity(心胸狭窄)and hypocrisy(虚伪) 9.I understand so perfectly why you wrote to me as you did–although at the time that
letter nearly finished my life. I found it again the other day, and I couldn't help laughing as I read it. It was so clever–such a true picture of me.\" He glanced up. (P4.Para12)
Six years ago when he read the letter he nearly finished his life but now he felt funny when he read it. His sharp words hurt Vera’s heart. It shows his heartless and insularity.
10…It simply was that we were such egoists, so self-engrossed, so wrapped up in
ourselves that we hadn't a corner in our hearts for anybody else… (P5.Para11)
The man said both of them were very selfish and self-enjoy, they only cared about themselves. He belittled (贬低)Vera to build himself up. Finally, Vera found him unchanged and left. It shows his wiseacre(自以为是)and selfishness.
11。He caught up one of her gloves from the table and clutched at it as if that would
hold her. (P5.Para3)
But as she watched him draw her glove through his fingers, gently, gently…(P5.Para4)
He murmured, stroking the glove.(P5.Para7)
Suddenly with a quick gesture he handed her back the glove and scraped his chair on the floor. (P5.Para11)
At first he caught her gloves wanted to hold her. The action “stroking the glove” hints he was just be infatuated with her appearance . At last “ he handed her back the glove “ means he did not really love her. It shows his frivolity(轻浮)and childishness.
Personality, the man was heartless , selfish, hypocritical(虚伪的),arrogant(傲慢的),self- engrossed and mean…
1。He was seated at one of those little bamboo tables decorated with a Japanese vase
of paper daffodils. (P1.Para1)
His clothes were admirable, and at that moment he pulled a Russian cigarette case out of his pocket.(P2.Para10)
With a glimpse, Vera noticed his appearance and dress clearly, even the objects beside the man.
With these details, we can know Vera is very attentive(细心的).
2.…how well she remembered that trick of his–the trick of interrupting her–and of
how it used to exasperate her six years ago. (P1.Para13)
And in the warmth, as it were, another memory unfolded.(P2.Para4)
As she remembered the warm sunshine that was part of their experience of Ken Gardens, another memory came to mind, similarly pleasant. It shows Vera is quite reminiscent(怀旧的). 3。“But you are so fond of music, “he wondered.(P3.Para11)
From the man’s words, we can learn that Vera loves music deeply. In our opinion, a person who loves music must be emotional and sensitive. 4.And she seemed at that moment to be sitting on the grass beside the mysteriously
Black Sea, black as velvet, and rippling against the banks in silent, velvet waves. She saw the carriage drawn up to one side of the road, and the little group on the grass, their faces and hands white in the moonlight. (P4.Para1)
Notice that although Vera was not there, she was able to imagine the scene more vividly than the man could have done. It shows that although it was the man who was reminiscing, it was Vera who more emotionally involved.
It indicates Vera is emotional(多情的).
5。Was there just a hint of mockery in his voice or was it her fancy?(P4.Para5) Vera is not quite sure whether he is seriously showing his appreciation or mocking at her interest in what he was saying. But on her part, she was obviously touched by their past memories. 6。It began to play in her mind as she spoke.(P5.Para6)
She shivered, hearing the boatman’s song break out again…These are examples revealing how sensitive Vera is to music and art. And so is to love.
We can see that Vera is a sensitive(敏感的) person from these two sentences.
Six years ago, Vera left the man firmly(坚决地),And she did it again six years later.
So we think Vera is full of courage and quite rational(理性的).
7。It had been a wonderful afternoon, full of flowers and----warm sunshine.(P2.Para3) A person who does not love life, he/she will ignore the wonderful details, such as flowers and sunshine. It shows that Vera loves life.
In our opinion, Vera is the author’s miserable avatar(化身). So Vera’s character is almost like the author’s.
