Process Air and RadiantProcess Air HeatersOverview•Fintube® Heaters•Finstrip® Heaters•Circular Finstrip® Heaters•High TemperatureDuct Heaters•Medium TemperatureDuct Heaters•Low TemperatureDuct HeatersFintube® Elements — The finned tubulardesign provides the same benefits as thefinned strip heater and additional features, allowing for special bending configurations toprovide higher concentrations of installed kWfor a given area. The elements can be suppliedwith bulkhead threaded fittings, and mayinclude optional hermetically sealed terminals,or extra heavy wall thickness for use inatmospheres containing hazardous fumes orgasses. Element diameters of 0.315\" and0.475\" are standard, with high temperaturealuminum painted steel sheath and furnacebrazed fins being the most common materials.Stainless Steel or MONEL® sheath and finsare also available for corrosive environments.subdivided into 48 Amp maximum circuits incompliance with the National Electrical Code. The heater is provided with a Type “K”thermocouple attached to the sheath of oneelement to be used with a Chromalox highlimit control.Medium Temperature — Applicationtemperatures to 750°F are common for ADHand TDH type duct heaters which featureINCOLOY® sheath tubular heating elements. These versatile units are fully assembled andprewired with the elements subdivided into 48Amp maximum circuits in compliance with theNational Electrical Code.Low Temperature — Outlet air temperaturesto 440°F are typical for types CAB, CABB andDAB which use finned strip heater elements inan assembly which is then inserted in andbolted to existing ductwork.Comfort Heating Duct Heater — ChromaloxDH Series duct heaters are complete customduct heater systems which are listed with theUnderwriters Laboratory for comfort heatingapplications in commercial and industrialbuildings.PROCESS AIRAND RADIANTHeat processing applications vary widely fromindustry to industry. Curing, drying, heattreating, comfort heating, sterilizing andbonding represent just a few of the many usesfor electrically heated air. Applications vary intemperature from super cool cryogenic to hightemperatures up to 1200°F. Chromalox electricheaters can also be designed to heat specialatmospheres such as argon or nitrogen.Special materials and custom designs areavailable for marine applications, power plantsor hazardous applications.Chromalox can supply individual finnedelements for use in OEM equipment or entireduct heater assemblies where we havecomplete control over the product includingthe elements, frames and controls. Chromaloxhas earned an outstanding reputation forexceptional quality, reliability and long life.Duct Heater AssembliesHigh Temperature — Type ADHT is designedto provide outlet air temperatures up to1200°F using conservatively rated, low wattdensity, INCOLOY® tubular elements. Theheater includes three inches of high tempera-ture rated insulation below the mountingflange to reduce heat transfer to the wiringenclosure. The elements are prewired andFinned Heating ElementsFinstrip® Elements — Superior to open coilelements, the heating coil is completelyencased in a metal sheath, minimizing a shockhazard due to accidental contact with theheater. The rigid metal sheath minimizes hotspots and electrical shorting, likely with opencoil elements. Application temperatures to565°F are typical using finned strip units.Process Air Heaters — Selection GuidelinesTypeFintube®FeatureRating0.47 - 100.5 - 6.20.5 - 4.30.3 - 2.40.2 - 4.11.9 - 5.05 - 2705 - 3006 - 606 - 1002.5 - 530-60kWModelFTS & FTIFTS & FTISFTS & SFTISFTS & SFTIOTFKSEFADHADHTTDHCAB & CABBDABSDRAPageE-3E-4E-5E-7E-9E-11E-12E-15E-16E-17E-19E-20E-230.475\" Fintube®0.315\" Fintube®0.475\" Single End0.315\" Single EndFinstrip®Finstrip®Circular StripAir DuctMedium TemperatureHigh TemperatureMedium TemperatureLow TemperatureRound DuctPortable Blower HeaterHigh TemperatureTubular Air Duct Heaters (Specification Data Sheets)E-1Process Air and RadiantFT Series® Figure 1 — Dimensions (Inches)LFintubeAirHeaters Overview • Many Sheath and Fin Materials Available • 475 - 10,000 Watts • 120, 240 and 480 Volt• 750 to 900°F Max. Process Air and RadiantProcess Radiant HeatersOverview•Metal Sheath, Medium Intensity& Medium Wavelength•Quartz, High Intensity & ShortWavelength•Quartz, Medium Intensity &Medium Wavelength•Radiant Oven Assemblies•Wide Area Quartz Panels•Ceramic PanelsChromalox has been recognized as thepredominate source of metal sheath radiantheaters since 1948. Since that time, radiantheat has become the preferred processheating method for a multitude of applicationsin various industries. This is due to the uniqueproperties of the infrared heating processwhich provide a number of significantadvantages over other conventional heattransfer methods.High Efficiency — Infrared heaters createradiant energy to directly heat the product asopposed to a convection oven which isdependent on air circulation as the heattransfer medium. This results in more efficientenergy usage and lower operating cost. Byeliminating the air medium, radiant heatingalso reduces the losses associated with hot airovens.Shorter Oven Lengths — As a result of thegreater heating rates, most products can beheated much more rapidly than in a convec-tion oven. Due to shorter product heatingcycles using radiant heat, less oven length isrequired to do the job. This can result in anoven length reduction of 30 to 50% ascompared to convection oven designs.Cleaner Environment — There are no dirty orcontaminating products of combustionpresent with electric infrared heaters. Sinceinfrared is not dependent on air as the heattransfer method, the air circulation in aninfrared oven is kept at a minimum. TheE-24greater the volume of air circulated and thefaster it is circulated, the greater the dirt factorand the product rejects due to dirt. Powdercoatings and light weight materials can beheated rapidly due to low volume of air andlow velocities.Close Product Temperature Control —Infrared heat can be easily controlled anddirected. Electric infrared heaters can be“zoned” to provide a high heating zone in onezone and a lower heating rate in another.Infrared heaters are very responsive to controlchanges; accurate and consistent producttemperature control to within extremely closetolerances are possible.Lower Initial Cost — Due to the simplicity ofan electric infrared heating system, initialcosts and maintenance costs are lower. When infrared is the method deemed mostsuitable for your application, the Chromaloxproduct line provides the largest selection ofelements, fixtures and controls. There aremany factors to consider: size, heaterresponse, heater efficiency and heater pricing.Chromalox is a major supplier of INCOLOY®sheath, quartz tube, quartz lamp, ceramic, quartz panel and ceramic composite paneltypes of elements. Each has its own uniqueadvantages depending on the application:Short-Wave, High Intensity - Quartz LampMedium-Wave, Medium Intensity - QuartzTube and Quartz Panel - INCOLOY® Sheath,Ceramic and Ceramic Composite Panel.Process Air and RadiantProcess Radiant HeatersTechnical & Application DataRadiation is the process by which energy istransmitted through space without significantloss. Radiant energy is transferred fromsource (emitter) to receiver (absorber) in theform of electromagnetic waves. Heat is theresult of absorption of this radiant energy bythe receiver.Radiation differs from convection andconduction because it does not require thepresence of a medium (solid, liquid or gas) totransmit energy from the source to its finaldestination. By eliminating the heat transfermedium, radiant heating also eliminates thelosses associated with other methods. Therefore, radiant heating provides maximumefficiency for your application. The Electromagnetic Spectrum covers therange of wave lengths of radiant energy. Theinfrared portion of the spectrum (0.72 to 1000microns) includes those wavelengths whichwill produce heat upon being absorbed by anobject (see Figure 1). The radiant energy, orwavelength, of an infrared element depends onits temperature: the higher the temperature, the shorter the peak wavelength. Infraredwavelengths are longer than visible light butshorter than microwaves. The energy outputof a radiant source depends upon the absolutetemperature of the source, raised to the fourthpower. As source temperature increases, heating intensity becomes very great. Theuseful wavelengths for industrial applicationsare from 1 to 10 microns.Infrared radiation is similar to visible light. Ittravels through space at the speed of light(186,000 miles/sec), moves in a straight line, can be focused by optical reflectors, will travelthrough a vacuum, and is absorbed, transmit-ted or reflected by objects or materials. In order to heat a product, the waves must beabsorbed. Usually less than 10% of the wavesare reflected, and the other 90% is eitherabsorbed by or transmitted through thematerial. The best way to determine theabsorption efficiency of the product is throughtesting.Radiant heating is suitable where immersionor direct contact heating is impossible, impractical or undesirable. When infrared isthe method deemed most suitable for yourapplication, the Chromalox product lineprovides the largest selection of elements, fixtures and controls. If a specially designed heateris required, check with your Local ChromaloxSales office.Radiation Vs. Convection — Convection andradiation are capable of transferring energyfrom a source to the work material withoutcontact. They are naturally consideredtogether when contact-free heating must beperformed (see Figure 2). Due to the insulat-ing effect of the boundary film of air whichadheres tightly to all surfaces, gravityconvection heating becomes exceedingly slowand more and more inefficient as productionspeeds increase (see Figure 3).Forced convection of heated air directed at thework assists in breaking up the boundary film, but has the disadvantage of requiringenclosures and air handling equipment. If notrecirculated, the spent heating medium mustbe discharged with consequent heat loss. Thedesire for faster heating by this means tendstoward higher velocities which may lead tohigher oven losses and possible damage todelicate surfaces or contamination of the workby airborne dust. One factor promoting efficiency of applicationin radiant heating is that radiation falling on anopaque surface is immediately absorbed andtransformed into heat. The surface (and bythermal conduction, the internal body) isfrequently heated above the surroundingambient temperature. Where exhaustventilation must be provided to removevolatiles, noxious fumes or moisture, lowerambient temperatures reduce the amount ofheat carried away by the exhaust air and thenecessity for extensive oven insulation.E-25PROCESS RADIANTRadiantHeaterElement84Fast Infrared Heating5°F ---Process Air and RadiantProcess Radiant HeatersSelection GuidelinesSelection Guidelines•Metal Sheath, Medium Intensity& Medium Wavelength•Quartz, High Intensity & ShortWavelength•Quartz, Medium Intensity &Medium Wavelength•Radiant Oven Assemblies•Wide Area Quartz Panels•Ceramic PanelsThe metal-sheath type heater is easily installedand may be operated in any position. E-58Process Air and RadiantCP Series• 5 - 25 W/In2 • 0.55 - 18 kWWide Area Radiant HeatersFeaturesEasy Mounting — Heater can be mounted to radiate in any direction.Reliable Operation — No reduction in radiant output over life of heater. Uniform Radiation Pattern Assured with a wide fl at infrared surface versus the line pattern given in normal radiant heaters. This eliminates uneven heating of the work and allows uniform heating of a stationary surface such as in an indexing process.External Refl ectors Not Required — The refractory board and bulk insulation behind the heating element help prevent back heat loss. This eliminates the need for external refl ectors.One-Piece Bonded Construction resists dam-age from vibration and shock.Construction1. Heating Element — Precision iron base resistance wire, designed to give extended life and uniform emission over entire radiating surface.2. Emission Surface — Woven refractory cloth with black ceramic coating for high radiant energy transfer for CPLI, CPL and CPH type heaters. Aluminum emission surfaces are available for applications such as in the food industry.3. Frame — Heavy gauge, heat resistant, aluminized steel for CPLI, CPL and CPH type heaters.4. Heating Element Support — Fibrous ceramic material, specially developed for high insulation qualities, durability, shock resistance, asbestos free. • 120, 230, 240 and 480 Volt• 1 & 3 Phase• 1650°F Max. The maximum amount of radiant energy is transferred to the work with very low heater convection losses. Typical installation distance of two to four inches from the work surface signifi cantly reduces the energy input.Costly Downtime Minimized — There is no deterioration of the output radiation level with heater life and no refl ectors to clean which could cause downtime and increased mainte-nance costs. The unit is resistant to vibra-tion because of the compact homogeneous construction.Easy Installation — The light weight building block approach allows for a modular installa-tion which is easily expandable. These rugged panels can be mounted in any direction. Repeatable Process Performance Assured — Used with closed loop control, the system automatically compensates for ambient tem-perature ranges and line voltage fl uctuations. Maximum energy transfer requires matching the peak wavelength output to the specifi c ma-terial absorption characteristics. Because the peak wavelengths of the fl at surface heater are repeatable and adjustable, the quality output of the process is assured.5. Insulation — High temperature insula- tion to minimize heat loss from back of heater. 6. Terminals — For CPLI, lead-wires are provided on a 2 x 4\" junction box. A 2 x 4\" junction box with stainless steel terminals is provided for CPL and CPH type heaters.7. Thermowell — Quality tubular quartz thermowell, with strain relief, to accept a Chromalox C-700JU or C-700KU thermocouple on units with suffi x T in model number. Standard placement of the thermowell is on side of heater. Specials are available with thermowell exiting back of heater.Construction2143675E-59WCIEDREA AMRIECAProcess Air and RadiantCP SeriesWide Area Radiant Heaters (cont’d.)The CPH, CPL and CPLI are medium wave heaters. Micron levels between 2.5 and 6 of infrared energy are generated. At these micron levels the majority of the infrared energy generated falls into the medium wave section of the infrared spectrum.Outer edges of the element can have gradual increasing wattage density to compensate for production edge losses.Single elements or multiple elements can be zoned and wired to achieve specifi c profi les. Different width materials can be processed by turning off elements.Easy to Control — The use of time proportion-ing control with closed loop feedback, such as Chromalox 2104 temperature controllers, magnetic contactors or SCR power controllers assure easy and dependable system control. Thermowells may be offered in two loca-tions in the heater interior. Suitable to accept Chromalox standard thermocouples, they sense emitter temperature ensuring accurate wavelength emission. Fast response time of the unit reduces thermal lag.Overtemperature Control — It is strongly rec-ommended that these units be controlled such that overheating and premature failure do not occur. This is of particular importance in oven usage, where high ambient temperatures exist.CAUTION — Hazard of Fire. These radiant heaters must not be operated in the presence of fl ammable vapors, gases or combustible materials without proper ventilation and/or other safety precautions in compliance with either the National Fire Protection Bulletin 86A entitled “Ovens and Furnaces” or the authority having jurisdiction.
