The Importance of Reading Books

Name : Miranda

(Zhang Min)

Student number: 902032152

1. Introduction :

My research aims are to discover the importance of reading books at college . As we know, with the development of economy, the standard of Internet improves quickly. There are more ebooks and network novels on the Internet. Therefore, less people would like to read books in the library and know about the extracurricular reading behaviors of Chinese students, especially at the college level. In my opinion, reading books is meaningful and useful .There is an old Chinese saying reveals how important reading is:”If you don’t read for three days, you will become unattractive.”That is to say, it is necessary for us to read books .I think reading is like traveling to a new place. It is a way to learn new things about the world and get new ideas about yourself. It not only can increase your knowledge, but also can develop your qualities imperceptibly. Choosing this topic is just to tell college students the importance of reading books and encourage them to develop a good habit of reading books.

2. Method:

Students from the Inner Mongolia University of Finance and Economics were surveyed about their opinions on the topic of the importance of reading books at college. 20 college students from different majors (8 boys and 12 girls) were surveyed by having a communication with them on my research topic. The survey contained 10 questions (3 closed and 7 open) and the questionnaires were answered by the college students during the communication.

3. Literal review:

I find a survey that is about extracurricular reading habits of college students in Taiwan, which was written by Su-Yen, Chen, in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy on May 1st, 2007. Studies that analyzed self-reported by accurate statistics provide knowledge about the amount of time spend reading by college students and the influence of factors such as gender, parental education, academic achievement and college major on time spent reading, as well as students’ reading habits. Studies that focused on youth culture literary illuminate cultural influences on students’ time spent and choices. At last, the survey results were compared with surveys of students in the United States.

4. Discription of finding in written form and graph:

Presentation of survey results in written form

(1) The first question asked students whether they think reading books is

important at college. All the students responded “yes”.

(2) Question 2 focused on the reason why students think reading books is

important at college. The purpose was to discover students’ opinions about reading books and to discover whether they like reading and the value of reading.

(3) The third question asked students what they do in their sparetime in

their college life. This question was aimed at knowing college students’ hobbies and whether they would like to spend time reading books in their sparetime. However, students always surf the Internet, go shopping and watch movies, a few read books.

(4) Question 4 focused on whether they often go to library to read books.

Half of students said ”sometimes”, seven out twenty said “yes” and the remaining responded “no”.

(5) The fifth question related to what kinds of books they like to read. The

aim of this question was to know if students would like to pay more attention to the books’ types. Maybe we can know what kind of people they belong to.

(6) The six question asked which better between Chinese books and Foreign

books. It was in order to understand students’ opinions about Chinese books and Foreign books and how much they know these books. Two fifths of students like both; eleven twentieths of students like Chinese books; only one student think Foreign books are better.

(7) Question 7 focused on students’ major and question 8 asked students

what kinds of books they read except the books of their major. These two questions were to know the type of books they read everyday and except these books, what they are interested in most.

(8) The ninth question asked what they learn from books. It was to discover

the advantages that they get from books and to discover their understanding about the meaning of books.

when they read books.80% said “yes”; 15% said “sometimes”, while the remaining 5% said “no”.

(Point 1: paragraph……)

It is clear that from the survey that all the college students think reading books is important at college and majority of students would like to read books in their sparetime. They all think reading books can open their eyes and enrich their knowledge. It is the basic of developing a good reading habit.

(Point 2: paragraph……)

The survey showed that what kinds of books they like to read. Many college students like magazines about fashion and movels of love stories, not science books that can broaden their horizons and increase their knowledge or books related to their majors. That is to say, college students don’t have excellent plans for reading books and they don’t know the importance of a good book. A good book just like a perfect teacher or friend, it can teach you something you don’t know. It is important for you to choose a book.

(Point 3: paragraph……)

The research indicates that students would not like to spend more time reading books. In my opinion, majority of college students like to surf the Internet, go shopping and so on to relax themselves. College students often play computer games with friend, chat with friends and watch movies when they surf the Internet. Girls like to go shopping with two or three friends. Those make them happy and relaxed. When college students step into the library, they think seated at the desk reading books is lonely. But, in my opinion, you are wrong. You just look books as your best friends when you read books, you can gain a improvement of spirit by

communicating with books.

6. Conclusion:

In conclusion, it is clear that all the college students think reading books is important and majority of students would like to read books in their sparetime. However, nearly all the them don’t develop a good habit. They would not like to spend more time reading books, just read books before falling asleep or when they have nothing to do. College students aren’t used to thinking when they read books. What’s more, college students like to read magazines about fashion and novels of love stories, not science or literature. I think these habits are useless for students’ development. How important reading is! It is significant and necessary for us to read everyday and develop a good extracurricular reading habit.
