Were you the first or last child in your family? Or were you a

middle or an only child? Some people think it matters where you were born in your family. But there are. different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that the oldest child is smart and strong-willed. They are very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple: parents have a lot of time for their first child; they give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in a family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle ones sometimes get lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up to be funny and charming. Do you believe these ideas about birth order too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first child believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in a family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took more chances and they often did better in life.

11. According to common belief, in what way are the first child and the only child alike?

C.They don’t live with the other family members. D.They are more likely to be successful in life.

They followed on the success of “The Pickwick Papers” and established his reputation as a leading author.W: Dickens really was the first great popular novelist, wash’ t he?M: Exactly. He and his publishers had discovered the very useful means of writing in monthly parts so you could buy parts of novels serially, quite cheaply. Dickens’ works were absolutely best-sellers and this continued throughout the thirty or forty years of his writing life.W: Why is he still so popular, when so many writers go out of fashion?M: I think in the end you put it down to nothing short of genius, that what he was doing was writing for a popular audience in his own time.

The enthusiasm is catching, and I’d cheer along with everyone else.W: You are right there. But I’ d like to know exactly what I’m yelling for. 26. 【C1】 A.headed B.head C.heads D.heading

27. 【C2】 A.looks

B.takes C.attends D.cares

look after后的宾语是adults,为人,因此应为“照顾,照料”; take after意为“以……

28. 【C3】 A.volunteer B.volunteered C.voluntary D.volunteering

29. 【C4】 A.ranging B.arranging C.varying D.varied

30. 【C5】 A.elders B.elderly C.olders D.olderly

31. 【C6】 A.encouraged B.recognized C.admitted

D.complimented

encourage“鼓励”;recognize“认可”;admit“录取,承认(接句子,表示做了什么)”;compliment“恭维”。

32. 【C7】 A.bestowed B.feel C.given D.reserved

bestow sth.on/upon sb.“把……

33. 【C8】 A.effort B.endeavor C.contribution D.sacrifice

34. 【C9】 A.dedicated B.designed C.aimed D.intended

dedicate的用法是be dedicated to,意为“奉献,献给”; design的用法是be designed for;aim的用法是be aimed at;intend的用法是be intended for。

35. 【C10】 A.given out B.presented C.delivered D.handed out

give out“发表,公布”;present“颁发”;deliver“发表(演讲);递送,传递”;hand out“分发”。

36. 【C11】 A.guiding B.instructing C.guidance D.instruction

37. 【C12】 A.introduced B.nominated C.encouraged D.recommended

38. 【C13】 A.praise

B.acknowledge C.admission D.recognition

39. 【C14】 A.worried B.concerned C.afraid D.sorry

40. 【C15】 A.do

B.have done C.does D.has done

41. 【C16】 A.miss B.think of C.think about D.dream of

42. 【C17】 A.love B.choose C.like D.prefer

43. 【C18】 A.Princess B.Queen C.King D.Prince

44. 【C19】 A.exhausted B.involved C.devoted D.busy

A项用到的短语是be exhausted“筋疲力尽”,与文意不符;B项用到的短语是be involved in”卷入某事,参与某事”;C项用到的短语是be devoted to但此处是in,故可排除;D项用到的短语是be busy with sth.

45. 【C20】 A.by B.after C.in D.at

Section III Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)

Part ADirections: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Fourteen-year-old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest. Ninety-two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first. The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says “I did pretty well at staying calm. I couldn’t be thinking about how many mistakes I’d make--it would

distract me from playing. “he says. “I don’t even remember trying to impress people while I played. It’s almost as if they weren’t there. I just wanted to make music.” Hawley is a winner. But he didn’t become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well. “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part,” said the founder of the modem Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” New research shows that Coubertin’s philosophy is exactly the path achievers take to win at life’s challenging games. A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr. Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions. “They are interested in winning, but they’re more interested in self-development, testing their limits.” One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they’ve had--and how much they’ve learned from each. “Not one of the 1, 500 I studied defined losing as failing,” Garfield says. “They kept calling their losses ‘ setbacks’.” A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree. “The worst thing you can do if you’ve had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them.” Garfield believes that most people don’t give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you’ve done on the way to a goal.

46. Hawley won the contest because ______. A.he tried his best to avoid making mistakes B.he cared much about the judges’ feelings C.he put all his mind to his performance

D.he paid close attention to the people around

47. What is common among high performers is that they tend to give priority to ______.

A.glory B.wealth C.pleasure D.work

A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on

work…”

48. According to the passage, successful people concentrate on ______. A.avoiding setbacks

B.challenging their own limits C.defeating their opponents D.learning from others

根据文章第六段“They are interested in winning, but they’re more interested in self-development,testing their limits.”与B项“challenging their own limits”意思相符,故选B。

49. It can be learned from the passage that top performers are not ______. A.free of losses

B.interested in winning C.accustomed to failures D.concerned about setbacks

50. The passage tells us that “praise” in times of trouble ______. A.helps people realize their goals

B.helps people deal with their disappointment C.makes people regret about their past D.makes people forget their setbacks

When we think about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, a peak of great delight--and those peaks seem to get rarer the older we get. For a child, happiness has a magical quality. I remember making hide outs in newly cut hay, playing cops and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school play. Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved. For teenagers, or people under

twenty, the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love, and popularity. I can still feel the agony of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to. But I also recall the great happiness of being invited at another event to dance with a very handsome young man. In adulthood the things that bring great joy--birth, love, marriage--also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. Love may not last, sex isn’t always good, and loved ones die. For adults, happiness is complicated. My dictionary explains happy as “lucky” or “fortunate”, but I think a better explanation of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to love where we please, even good health. Nowadays, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, we have turned happiness into one mode thing we “gotta have”. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us extremely unhappy. So we chase it and consider it to be the same as wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier. While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as ever. Happiness isn’t about what happens to us--it’s about how we perceive what happens to us. It’s the ability to find positive for every negative, and view a setback as a challenge. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.

51. According to the author, happiness lies in the ability to ______. A.feel the magic quality of pleasure B.experience delight at an old age C.think of something extraordinary D.enjoy what one has at the moment

由文章最后一句“It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.”

52. According to the passage, a teenager looks at happiness mainly in terms of ______.

A.spiritual satisfaction B.social distinction C.material gains

D.academic achievements

53. As is suggested in the passage, failure to feel happy often results from ______.

A.taking everything one has for granted B.lack of freedom to love and be loved C.lack of company of friends

D.ignoring the choices one is given in life

从文章第五段说“The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved…”

54. The author implies that when one chases wealth and finally gets it ______. A.he can realize what happiness is

B.he should not feel content with himself C.he may consider it extreme happiness D.he may not end up with happiness

55. The passage aims to tell ______. A.the constant pursuit of happiness B.the great importance of happiness C.the real meaning of happiness D.the changing concept of happiness

Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school. And, by the time that the average child finishes high school, he or she will have spent 18,000 hours in front of a television set as opposed to 12,000 hours in a classroom. Parents are concerned about these figures. They are also concerned about the lack of

quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Even if it is unreal--a cartoon cat beating up a cartoon mouse with a baseball bat--this violence may have a negative effect on the young minds exposed to it. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they may become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers. Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is “Sesame Street”, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live. Even though most parents and educators give “Sesame Street” and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it. We still do not know enough about the effects of watching television to be able to say whether or not it is good for children. Until we do, perhaps it would be wise to put a warning on television sets such as the one on cigarette packages: “Caution: Watching Too Much Television May Be Harmful to Your Child’s Developing Mind.”

56. We can infer from the text that ______.

A.children may imitate what they have seen on television B.a cartoon program is not harmful if it is not real

C.parents are strongly opposed to children watching TV

D.the quality of children’s programs is not the parents’ main concern

57. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text about some parents’ attitudes toward commercials?

A.Children can benefit from some commercials.

B.Advertisers are not always telling troth in commercials. C.Children should never watch commercials on TV.

D.There shouldn’t be too many commercials in children’s programs.

58. Some critics argue that children should not watch TV because ______. A.they can learn little from educational programs B.watching TV makes their way of life passive C.there is too much violence on TV D.TV programs are of poor quality

由文章第五段最后一句“These critics feel that…turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world…”

59. Which of the following is the author’s opinion? A.We should limit the children’s time in watching TV. B.We should improve educational programs for children. C.No commercials should be shown in children’s programs.

D.TV programs may prevent children from developing their minds.

60. The best title for the text would be ______. A.Education and Television B.Bad Influence of Television C.Children and Television D.TV Programs for Children

Part BDirections: Read the text, match the items (61-65) to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Read the following article in which five people talk about smoking. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A to G)given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Richard: In my opinion, smoking is only an amusement, like playing cards, reading, etc. Many years ago, when an adult handed me a cigarette and lit it for me, I felt grown up. When I am with friends and have nothing to say, we smoke, consequently we no longer feel embarrassed. Sometimes, I light a cigarette, suffering and nervousness vanishing

with the smoke, I can’t help saying inwardly: Hello, cigarette, my old friend, I’m coming to meet you again. Stanton: Many people believe smokers have the fight to smoke. But they also believe that others shouldn’t have to pay a price. The risk of tobacco smoke is greater than the risk of radon gas is to non-smokers. We’re talking maybe 40 percent greater. And if you’re talking about all the carcinogenic air pollutants that EPA regulates, it’s 100 times greater. Davis: According to our investigation, tobacco smoke in the home and workplace could be killing 46,000 non-smokers each year in the United States. That’s 3, 000 lung cancer deaths, 11, 000 from other cancers and 32,000 heart disease deaths. That would make passive smoking the leading preventable cause of death in the United States after alcohol and smoking itself. Smoking kills 390,000 while alcohol 120, 000. James: Passive smoking has become the principal battleground for the tobacco industry and its opponents in the 1980s. It is no longer merely a health issue, but political and environmental. Cigarette pollution is fouling the air. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s indoor air program’s result, we know that the indoor environment is far more polluted than the outdoor environment. We’ve seen that again and again wherever we’ve looked all over the United States. Winston: Sir, another fact about smoking is that cigarettes give people a good deal of pleasure. There is considerable evidence, surprisingly little publicized, showing that smoking produces certain beneficial effects in human beings. Smoking counteracts some decrease in efficiency, and smokers improve their performance in complex situations while smoking. There is also evidence showing that nicotine can produce a tranquilizing effect during high emotional and shock situations, while on the other hand stimulating concentration in tedious situations. Now match each of the items(61 to 65)to the appropriate statement Note: There are two extra statements. Statements [A] Passive smoking is the third preventable cause of death. [B] Smokers have the right to smoke. [C] Smoking produces some positive effects in some complex situations. [D] Second-hand smoke is more harmful to non-smokers than those cancer-inducing air pollutants. [E] Cigarette pollution has caused outdoor environment even worse. [F] Smoking can help people get rid of nervousness. [G] Smoking is also an environmental issue.

Part B 67. Recently China Daily held a questionnaire in which whitecollars both in China and in Korea were asked whether they were happy or not, and the result was shown in the following pie charts. Study the charts carefully and write an essay in

which you should: (1)describe the pie charts, (2) define what is happiness, and (3)state your position. You should write about 120 words and make full use of the information provided in the charts.

The charts above demonstrate the state of happiness among the whitecollars in China and Korea. Chinese whitecollars are comparatively happier than their Korean counterparts, which is indicated by the statistics 18.51% and 10.97%. However, in both countries more whitecollars still feel unhappy, which should arouse our social concern. Happiness can be defined in three basic ways. Firstly, good health itself is happiness. Without good health, we lose the ability to love our life and to contribute to our society. Secondly, performing what we enjoy is happiness. Choosing a job one is willing to dedicate his life to is critical to the feeling of happiness. Thirdly, to bring happiness to other people is happiness. Our own happiness derives from our willingness to bring others happiness. In short, happiness has a rich connotation which needs much of our reflection. In my view, we should not only bravely face tile difficulties and hardships of various kinds so as to keep a realistic attitude, but also keep an optimistic state of mind so as to see the bright side of our life and work. Only in these ways can we always feel happy.
