Activity 1:
1. Where is Tian’anmen Square ? (middle, Beijing)
2. Where are the British Isles?
3. Is Guangzhou in the east of China? (South)
4. Can you see the high-rise buildings of Pudong from the Bund? (across the water)
5. What part of China is the city Urumqi in? (suburb, Beijing)
6. Do you know where the Summer Palace is ?(suburb, Beijing)
Option 1:
(1) Ask the students to read through the questions and answer them
individually with the words in the brackets.
(2) Put the students into pairs to compare their answers.
(3) Finally call back the answers from the class.

Activity 2:
1. The teacher may first ask the students to read A Lively City again carefully and underline the sentences that contain the coordinate conjunctions “and” as well as “but”.
2. Ask the students to work in pairs comparing the differences and similarities of the two conjunctions “and” as well as “but”. Complete the sentence using the words “and” and “but”.
