My opinion on television

Television is playing a more and more important role in our daily life and now it has become the most popular form of entertainment.

Television presents a vivid and colorful world before us. With television, we can know what is going on at home and abroad. With television, we can watch films, football matches, plays at home. With television, we can visit many interesting places in the world without going outside the house and with television, we can watch educational programs and study university courses.

But many people take a hostile attitude towards television. They think television takes up too much of our spare time and makes us lazy. And television violence and terror may have bad effects on our children.

I hold the view that television’s advantages outweigh its disadvantages. The question is how to improve television so that it can contribute more to our lives.

2.My View On Examinations

There has long been a debate over examinations. Some people are in favor of them, saying that exams offer the best and quickest way of testing the students’ knowledge and ability. Others are against them, arguing that exams do more harm than good to students. Some of them even go to extremes when they claim that the exam system should be abolished; otherwise, the standards of education cannot be improved. In my opinion, exams are important and necessary, both for students and teachers. As we know, the aim of exams is to find out how well a student has studied in a certain course and how much knowledge he has gained. Through preparation for the exam, the student can make the new knowledge permanent; and the exam results can tell him what he needs to study more. As for the teacher, by testing his students, he can have a clear picture about his students’ range of knowledge; and the exam results will indicate clearly what he should do in his future teaching.

Since exams are necessary, we students should develop a sound attitude towards them.

3.Is failure a bad thing?

It is quite usual that one meets failures, for one's life can never be plain sailing. However, diffhrent people hold diffhrent attitudes towards failure.

Some people think it a heavy blow to fail in achieving something and they can not endure failure. When they meet failure, they will be seriously dejected and can never pluck up their courage to try again. However, others think it natural to meet failures in one's career. Therefore, they are psychologically prepared. When they meet failures, they will not be frustrated. Instead, they will continue to meet new challenges. As to me, I'm in favor of the latter view. Failure is really a terrible thing but it is also the mother of success. If one draws lessons from failures, in most cases he will get success in the future. Furthermore, one's life can never be smooth sailing; it must be full of difficuhies and setbacks. If one is daunted by difficuhies and frustrations, he will always be a failure. However, if one holds a positive attitude toward failure, he will overcome difficulties and frustrations to win victory.

4.Owing Private Cars

In a developing country like China, most people cannot afford a private car at present. Only a small portion of the population can enjoy such a luxury.

However, with the rapid and steady progress of our economy, people’s income has been going up. It is quite believable that more and more people will be able to buy their own cars in a few years. As people prefer to live in suburbs and work in cities, private vehicles will soon become one of the necessities in their life.

This will subsequently give rise to many problems. For instance, the streets will be jammed with cars, and traffic accidents may increase accordingly. In addition, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Therefore, effective measures should be taken in advance to avoid such consequences.

5.Reading selectively or extensively?

Once famous English philosopher Francis Bacon said, \"Reading makes a full man\But books are of various kinds and different contents. Then how to read?

Some people say that we should read selectively. They believe that it is not how much one reads but what he reads that really counts. Since we have no enough time to read all kinds of books, we should read selectively to achieve a high efficiency, reading only those that are useful to our majors and future works. Only by this way can we make full use of our time, and gain more practical knowledge.

However, others claim that reading extensively is a better choice.In their opinions, different books are of different uses. Just like Bacon mentioned, \"Histories make men wise；poets witty；the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to content.\" Therefore, reading widely is necessary for a full man. In my opinion, we should read both selectively and extensively. The two reading ways have their respective roles in our reading. We can read selectively for specialized knowledge, or read widely for general information.Therefore, the combination of the two methods is more reasonable.

6.How I Finance My College Education

With reform in other fields, higher education in China is also undergoing great changes. One of them is the newly-adopted tuition policy. According to the new policy, college students are supposed to pay an average sum of 2500 - 5000 yuan each year as tuition. In addition, they must pay other fees, such as accommodation and healthcare.

Students can finance their college education in various ways. They depend on their parents,as is the most common case in China. They do parttime jobs to earn the money. For the excellent students, they try to obtain scholarships. And for the especially poor students, they may turn to the loan programs for financial aid.

With one of my parents being laid-off, my family can't possibly afford all my expence at college. However, my family is not as hard-up as those from the poverty-stricken areas, and I don't want to seek help from the loan programs. Instead,I

practice selfreliance by offering instruction as a tutor. In this way I find myself not only helping out a lot financially, but also, by getting out of the ivory tower,making great progress academically. As a resuh, I have won the first-class scholarship for two years on end. Fortunately, I have crone by the best way to finance, as well as to benefit from, my college education.

7.Is a test of spoken English necessary?

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of College English Test. Many people believe it's very necessary to take such a test. To begin with, as a basic part of the language, spoken English is getting more and more important in this infimnation age. One won't achieve much in intercultural communication unless one can speak perfect English. In other words, fluent English is an indication of one's mastery of the language. Therefore, a test ought to be designed to assess one's ability of spoken English.

However, some people don't think it's necessary to take such a test. They hold that written exam is enough to indicate one's English level. As far as one doesn't want to study abroad or cooperate with foreigners in foreign enterprises or companies,one needn't worry about taking a test of spoken English. Because written English enables students not only to read reference hooks but also work on Internet. Therefore, in their opinion, a test of spoken English will only add to the students' over-study-load. It's not absolutely necessary for students to take it.

I believer it's very necessary for students to take it. On the one hand, such a test will stimulate students to improve their oral English. On the other hand, it will help make students competent in the fierce competition, and push their English to a higher level. To sum up,with China's entry into the WTO and the arrival of knowledge economy age, it's more and more important for students to improve their oral English. Therefore, a test of spoken English is not only necessary, but also vital important.

8.How to succeed in a Job interview?

Nowadays both the interviewee and the interviewer are attaching more and more

importance to job interview. As far as the interviewers are concerned, they tend to feel it unscientific to evaluate the competence of the interviewees by just reading their written materials, such as the application forms, self-introductions, etc. A face to face interviewing is more reliable and informative. As far as the interviewees are concerned, they think that they also have the right to get to know the employer and the company in which they are going to work, e.g. what work they are going to do, how much money they can get etc.

However, many interviewees fail once and again in their job interview. They want to know the secret in job interview.

There are many factors that determine the success of the job interview. For example, a dean and tidy appearance will surely attract the attention of the interviewers; a graceful manner is easy to leave a good impression on your would be boss. When it comes to the job, the applicant should display a wide range of expertise and strong confidence in himself. Nevertheless, be sure not to overstate but stick to reality; show your keen enthusiastic about the job and your strong desire for obtaining the job all the way.

Once you achieve what is mentioned above, the new job will be within your reach.

9.Fast food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China , especially among children and teenagers .

There are several reasons for its popular . First , it is very convenient and saves a lot of time . You just go into a fast food restaurant , order your food , and your food is ready in time . Second , you can either eat it there or take it away . Third , the envronment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable . Fourth , it has excellent service , and the quality of food is guaranteed . However , it terns of nutrition , IT is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutrittional value .

Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while . But for people , especially children , eat fast food as little as possible .
