A
It is the first school that teaches us right and wrong. It is our dearest place that protects us from danger. It is our family.
Usually, we think families are just parents and children. But the family structure (结构) is different in different cultures.
In many Asian countries, big families are common. In some big cities, families usually have three generations (一代人) living in the same house. When parents are busy with work, grandparents help to do housework and take care of the children. While in most Western countries, many people prefer nuclear (核心) families: families that have only parents and children. During the daytime, working parents send their children to their grandparents’ home or a daycare center. And after work, they pick the children back up and go home. Some families are even DINK (double income, no kids). According to a 2010 report, one in five American couples don’t want a child.
Besides the structure, responsibility (责任) of parents to their children can also be different. In China, many parents look after their children all the way into adulthood. It’s normal for parents to pay children’s college tuition (学费). After graduation (毕业), many parents also help find a job for their children, or buy an apartment for them. In Western countries, however, children are supposed to be quite independent after they reach the age of 18. Most parents will not pay their children’s tuition. Young people mostly have a part-time job or turn to the government for help to cover their tuition.
Although families in the East and West may differ, it is the best place to warm us and teach us important values of love and care.
56. Which is true about the family in China?
A. It has fewer generations living together than that in most west countries. B. Parents in China are usually busier than those parents in west countries. C. There are usually more members in the same house than in west countries. D. There are fewer couples in China who don’t want a child than in America. 57. The third paragraph is mainly about____________. A. what family is like in many Asian countries B. what family is like in most Western countries C. family structures between the East and West D. living conditions between the East and West
58. Why will most parents not pay their children’s tuition after they are 18 in Western countries? A. Because they don’t think it’s their responsibility any longer.
B. Because most parents can’t afford to pay their children’s tuition. C. Because all their children can have a part-time job. D. Because the government will offer to pay the tuition.
59. What family differences in different cultures are mentioned in this passage?
5 / 11
a. importance b. responsibility c. structure d. future e. independence A. abd B. bce C. abc D. cde 60. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Family is the first school that teaches us right and wrong. B. Family is our dearest place that protects us from danger. C. Families teach us important values of love and care. D. Families may be different in the East and West.
B
―What’s the name of our neighbor? I can’t remember right now.‖ Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes? Usually, we think that older people’s memory becomes bad because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists at the University of Tubingen in Germany has a new idea.
―The human brain works slower in old age,‖ says Michael Ramscar, the lead scientist, ―but only because they have stored (储存) more information over time.‖
The findings come from a series of computer simulations (模拟) of learning and memory. Scientists let the computers read the certain number of words and learn new things each day. When the computer ―read‖ only so much, its performance on cognitive (认知) tests is similar of a young adult. But if the computer learned the experiences that we might encounter over a lifetime, its performance is similar to that of an older adult.
Often it was slower, but not because its processing ability had got worse. Rather, increased ―experience‖ had caused the computer’s database (数据库) to grow, giving it more data to process – which takes time.
This is similar to old people. Imagine a person knows two people’s birthdays. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people, but can only match the right person to the right birthday nine times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person?
The basic idea is that ―The larger the library you have in your head, the longer it usually takes to find a particular word,‖ Benedict Carey, a reporter for The New York Times, wrote in an article about the study.
61. What can we know from the questions that our grandparents ask sometimes? A. Grandparents came to visit us a few days ago. B. Grandparents’ memory becomes bad. C. Grandparents have a new neighbor now.
D. Grandparents don’t know the neighbor at all.
62. According to the new research, old people easily forget people’s names because _________. A. they have a poor memory
B. they are too old to remember things C. their brains have become weak
D. there is too much information in their brains
63. What does the underlined word ―encounter‖ in Paragraph 3 mean? A. meet B. miss C. pick D. forget . The scientists did computer simulations to show that ____________. A. even a computer can get old
B. the computer has more abilities than human
6 / 11
C. the processing ability of a computer can get worse D. the growth of the database makes the computer slow 65. The purpose of the article is to _____________.
A. tell the difference between a computer and a brain B. show how a computer database works C. explain why old people have poor memory D. encourage people to forget the unhappy things
C A. Escalators are like moving toys for many kids B. So you need to look at what local people do C. And holding onto the handrails (扶手) is the most important thing of all D. Escalator steps are not designed for running E. But there are also some cultural differences On April 17 at an outside-school activity in Shenzhen, a student was tying his shoes on an escalator (手扶电梯) when it reached the floor. This caused a stampede (件). Nine students were injured.
It’s important to follow the safety rules when riding on the escalator. 66 . Usually people stand on the right side of the escalator, because our right arms are stronger.
67 . They like to run up and down on them. This is dangerous, even if you are not in the way. 68 , experts warn. The space between every two steps on an escalator is usually wider than that of normal steps in buildings.
The two rules can be seen in most countries. 69 . In most countries, people stand on the right side on escalators. The left side is saved for those who are in a hurry. But in Australia, people usually stand on the left side.
70 . But the idea behind choosing a side on escalators is the same: to show your respect to others. It could also save people’s lives.

Should teenagers be asked to move out when they start working? In many Western countries, teenagers are allowed to move out at eighteen. Their parents believe that they should be educated to take care of themselves from a young age. This way, when they start working they can manage their own lives.
However, in most Asian societies, it is not common for teenagers to move out. Chinese parents believe that it is better for children to live with parents who can take care of them. But the young should then look after their parents as they get older. That is why many Chinese adults continue to live with their parents.
