S7-200 SMART CPU Firmware Update Procedure
Procedure to create a Firmware Update memory card:
1. Insert a blank microSD HC memory card (capacity 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB) into a
SD card reader/writer attached to your PC (a microSD-to-SD card adapter may be required). If the card is not blank, then delete any folder(s) with the following names “SIMATIC.S7S”, or “FWUPDATE.S7S”, and the file “S7_JOB.S7S”.
2. Select the S7-200 SMART CPU FW update ZIP file for your CPU model and
open this ZIP file from within the WinZIP utility. A single .exe file shall be present within the ZIP file. Extract the.exe file to a temporary folder, then close the WinZIP utility.
3. Double-click the .exe file just extracted into the temporary folder, set the file
destination path to be the root directory of the memory card (e.g. F:), and start the extraction process. After the extraction is complete, the root directory of the memory card will contain the folder “FWUPDATE.S7S” and file “S7_JOB.S7S”. The “FWUPDATE.S7S” folder shall contain the .upd update file appropriate for your CPU model.
4. Remove the memory card from the card reader.
5. The Firmware Update memory card is now ready for use.

1. Insert the Firmware Update memory card into your CPU. If your CPU is
powered up when the card is inserted, then the CPU shall go to STOP mode if currently in RUN mode, and the STOP LED shall begin flashing.
2. If the CPU is not powered, then start the firmware update by turning on
power to the CPU.
3. If the CPU is already powered, then start the firmware update by:
a. Power-cycling the CPU, or
b. Performing a Warm Restart, using Micro/WIN SMART
The CPU will startup and begin the firmware update process. The RUN LED and STOP LED alternately flash while the firmware update is in progress. The firmware update is complete when the RUN LED turns off and the STOP LED flashes. Note: if the ERROR LED is also flashing after update completion, then an update error has occurred.
4. Remove the memory card from your CPU.
5. To use the new firmware, restart your CPU by:
a. Power cycling the CPU, or
b.
Performing a Warm Restart, using Micro/WIN SMART

The user blocks and IP suite setup stored in the CPU are not affected by the firmware update. After the power cycle or restart, the CPU will enter the configured startup state, if a System Block is present in the CPU, or STOP mode otherwise.
