To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human. Common sense is not all that common. Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse?

These three popular misquotes (戏谑的引语) are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don't want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do. The original quote about human nature went like this:\"To err is human, to forgive, divine (神圣的).\" This saying mirrors a deal people should be forgiving of others' mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite-find someone else to pass the blame on to.

However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity.

Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine.Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company, \"the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.\"

And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people. get the idea that it's okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary (直接推论) to that: if good excuse is \"good\" even if it isn't honest, then where is the place of the truth? 21.According to the passage, which of the following seems the most human? A.to search for truth B.to achieve one's ideal

C.to make fun of others' mistakes

D.to criticize others for one's own error

22.Which of the following is NOT based on common sense? A.A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company. B.A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather. C.A company's next move follows a good plan. D.A lawyer acts on fine judgments.

In 1994 I wrote a letter. I stuck it in an envelope, put it away and completely forgot about it.It wasn't until we moved into our new home in 2006 that I found it again. It was addressed to me with explicit instructions not to open until my birthday 2005. It was now 2006 so I decided to open it. This is what it said:Dear Sherri.

By the time you read this you will be 30. At the age of 18 I had so many hopes and dreams about where you'd be, what you'd be doing and with whom you'd spend your life with.

Right now I hope that you have traveled and seen everything you've always wanted to, both in Canada and overseas, and maybe even settled down somewhere in Australia doing some research in the field of biology (genetics).I hope you're married to the man of your dreams. The man of mine is Gwynn. He is originally from South Africa (another place I wish to visit).

However, if things don't go according to plan for you, I wish you all the love, happiness and joy in the world and don't settle for anything less than the best since that is absolutely what you deserve.

Live long, be happy and live life to it's fullest. Love Sherri \"18″

When I read this for the first time since writing it I was floored. Even now having dug this up again another 4 years later I still can't help but think this is really cool.So much of what I wanted for myself has materialized.I did travel to a few more places in Canada although I haven't seen everything I'd like to.

I did marry the man of my dreams and yes he still is my one and only.I lived in Australia for nearly 4 years

I had a career in Biology in the field of genetics for 10 years.I have two lovely kids I have not one dog but two dogs. Gwynn is a computer programmer.

I suppose these were things that I really did want. Having never strayed too far from home overseas travel was a huge deal. Having never been away from my family moving to Australia for several years was an huge decision.I find it fascinating how the dreams of a young and naive little girl can become a grown woman's reality.

How about writing a letter now to yourself in,say,10 years from now? It’s an interesting experiment.

23.When the author found the letter in the new house,________. A.she didn’t realize it was a letter from herself B.she decided to read it on her 30th birthday

Before the 1830s most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America,

usually $8 to S10 a year. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens.Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to

a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in

the 1830s would change all that. The trend, then, was toward the \"penny paper\" — a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.

This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible (but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities, At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny — usually two or three cents was charged — and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase \"penny paper\" caught the public's fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.

This new trend of newspapers for \"the man on the street\" did not begin well. Some of the early ventures were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.

26. Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?

A. Academic. B. Inexpensive. C. Unattractive. D. Confidential. 27. What did street sales mean to newspapers? A. They would be priced bigger. B. They could have more readers. C. They would disappear from cities. D. They could regain public trust.

28. Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at? A. Local politicians. B. Rich businessmen. C. Young publishers. D. Common people.

29. What can we say about the birth of the penny paper? A. It was a disaster for printers. B. It was a temporary success. C. It was a robbery of the poor. D. It was a difficult process.

In my mind, there is a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart.

Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But Being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. Despite his hard training at all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played.

This teenager lived alone with his father, and the relationship between the two of them was very special. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him.

The young man loved football and was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he'd get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a benchwarmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a\"walk-on\". Everyone firmly believed that he could never make the cut, but he did.

The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but actually he never got the real chance to play in a game.

It was at the end of his senior football season that the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became totally silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, \"My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today? \"The coach put his arm gently around his should and said,\"Take the rest of the week off, son. And don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.\"

Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon. \"Coach, please let me play. I've just got to play today, \"said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close play-off game. But the young man insisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. \"All right, \"he said. \"You can go in. ''Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to succeed. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid got a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown.

Finally, after the stands had emptied, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him and said, \"Kid, you were unbelievably fantastic!Tell me what got into you? How did you do it? \"

He looked at the coach, tears in his eyes, and said\"Well, you knew my had died, but did you know that my dad was blind?\"The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, \"Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could make it!\"

30.What's the writer's attitude towards the young boy in this passage?_________

A.Appreciative. B.Critical. C.Grateful. D.Negative. 31. What does the underlined sentence”he got absolutely nowhere”mean? A. He could never make his father see his performance clearly. B. There was no chance of his becoming a top athlete in this sport. C. There was no coach to train him well enough to be a good player. D. He had no idea at all what kind of person he wanted to be in future.

32. Who felt very pleased when the young man was chosen to be a member of his college team? A. His teachers and classmates. B. His coach and classmates. C. His parents and relatives.

D. He himself and his father.

33.From the passage, we can infer that__________.

A.the young man's coach played an important role in his growth B.the young man's father had a great positive influence on him C.not until his father passed away did the young man train hard D.the young man's road to success in football was always smooth

34.Why did the young man return to the match on Saturday?___________ A.He hoped his dead father could be proud of his performance. B.He thought he was much better than other players in his team. C.He wanted to defeat the opposing team in this significant game. D. He planned to make money to cure his father of his blindness. 35. What’s the best title of the passage? A. A thrilling football match B. Determined father and son C. The power of dreams

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

In an online class, developing healthy patterns of communication with professors is very important. 36 While I have only listed two of each, there are obviously many other situations that can arise. Students should be able to extend the logic(逻辑)of each to their particular circumstance. Do's

• 37 Questions about subject content are generally welcomed. Before asking questions about the course design, read the syllabus(教学大纲)and learning management system information to be sure the answer isn't hiding in plain sight. • Participate in discussion forums(论坛), blogs and other open-ended forums for dialogue. 38 Be sure to stay on topic and not offer irrelevant information. Make a point, and make it safe for others to do the same. Don'ts

• Don't share personal information or stories. Professors are not trained nurses, financial aid experts or your best friends. If you are in need of a deadline extension, simply explain the situation to the professor. 39

• Don't openly express annoyance at a professor or class. 40 When a student attacks a professor on the social media, the language used actually says more about the student. If there is truly a concern about a professor's professionalism or ability, be sure to use online course evaluations to calmly offer your comments. A. If more information is needed, they will ask.

B. Below are some common do's and don'ts for online learners. C. That's what they are for.

D. Ask questions, but make sure they are good, thoughtful questions. E. Everyone has taken a not-so-great class at one time or another. F. Turn to an online instructor for help.

G. Remember that online professors get a lot of emails.

Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always

with words of encouragement for him.

Is there any shortcut to learning?

As is vividly described in the picture, -_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One possible version:

Is there any shortcut to learning?

As is vividly described in the picture, before the desk stands a student, who wants to find a book called “How To Do Well In School Without Studying”. However, the librarian tells him the book he wants is in the fiction section.

The message conveyed here is clear: “There’s no shortcut to learning.” It is the same with

success. Nowadays, a large number of people are longing for success without making efforts, just like the student in the picture.

As for me, whether you can succeed or not is based on the effort you make, either in study or in any other field. Take a look around us and we can see people who have achieved success with diligence instead of a shortcut. The story of Ma Yun, founder of China’s online business, best proves the significance of diligence. Remember: no pain, no gain. Stop daydreaming, make a practical plan and put ideas into practice.
