Unit 4 I want to be an actor.

Language Goal: Talk about jobs.

Lesson 1

Step 1. Free talk and presentation:

T: Do you know this woman and this man? Ss: No.

T: I don’t know, either. But I’m sure you know this man. Ss: Oh, yes. That’s Mr. Liu. T: What does he do? Ss: He’s a teacher.

T: Where does he work? Ss: He works in our school. T: And what does this man do? Ss: He’s a doctor.

T: Where does he work? Ss: He works in the hospital.

T: What about this woman? Is she a doctor? Ss: No, she isn’t. She’s a nurse.

(Show the pictures and present bank clerk, shop assistant, policeman, policewoman, police station, news reporter, TV station, actor, actress, waiter, waitress, thief, thieves like that)

Step 2. Memory Guessing:

Show the students nice pictures of different jobs. Then give them some time to memorize them. Then ask: What does the person do in Picture 1?

Ss give the answers as quickly as possible. Then show them the pictures again and practice in pairs:

A: What does the man do in Picture 1? B: He’s a …

A: Where does he work? B: He works in …

Step 3. Learn:

T: What other jobs do you know? Ss: …

Step 4. Homework:

Ss recite the new words as their homework.

Lesson 2

Step 1. Free talk and revise: T: What do you do? Ss: We are students. T: Where do you study?

Ss: We study in Taimen Middle School. T: Am I in Taimen Middle School, too? Ss: Yes, you are.

T: But am I a student, too?

Ss: No, you aren’t. You are a teacher. T: What do I teach? Ss: You teach English.

T: What does Mr. Wang teach? Ss: He teaches Chinese.

T: What does your father do? S1: …

T: Where does he work? S1: He works …

T: What about your mother? S1: She’s …

T: OK, talk about these people in pair one by one. Model: A: What does he do in Picture 1?

B: He’s a doctor.

A: Where does he work? B: He works in the hospital.

Step 2. Learn and act:

T: What other jobs do you know? Ss: …

T: What do you want to be? S1: I want to be a ..

T: Why do you want to be a …? S1: Because…

(Ss work in pairs and practice like that)

Step 3. Practice:

1a: Match the words with the people in the picture.

1b: Listen and number the people in the picture. (Then show the Ss the conversations and read them.)

2a: Listen and number the pictures.

2b: Listen again and fill in the chart. Then read the conversations.

3a: Show the Ss pictures and get them to fill in the blanks. And then get them to match the jobs with people in the pictures and read them. Then show them pictures of different jobs, get individual Ss to describe them.

Step 4. Guessing Game:

Show Ss descriptions of different jobs and get them to guess what he/she does. Get individual Ss to think of some descriptions and get others to guess.

Step 5. Explanation and exercises:

Explain some grammar points and Ss do some exercises in class.

Step 6. Homework:

Ss recite descriptions in 3a.

Lesson 3

Step 1. Free talk and revision:

T: Who’s you best friend in our class? S1: …is.

T: What does he do? S1: He’s a …

T: Where does he study? S1: He studies in…

T: What does he want to be? S1: I think he wants to be a …

T: Why does he want to be a…, do you know? S1: …

T: What about you, do you want to be a …, too? S1: … T: Why? S1: …

T: What about your best friend, S2? What does she want to be? S2: …

Step 2. Practice and consolidation:

Section B: 1a: Match the words with the pictures. 1b: Talk about the jobs in the pictures.

2a: Listen to the conversation. What jobs do Betty, Jenny, and Sam want?

Write the jobs in the chart. Then show them the tapescipt and Ss read them.

3a: Read the newspaper want ads. Fill in the blanks with the correct jobs.

Then read the ads and write another one by themselves. (3c)

3b: Write words for the pictures in the newspaper want ad. Then read it.

Step 3. Explanations and exercises:

Explain some grammar points and Ss do some exercises in class.

Step 4. Homework:

Revise the whole unit and recite the passages in 3a.
