You have to praise the smoothness(顺畅)of ants on the move. No matter how many of them are going toward a place, there's never a hold-up. A new research paper shows how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions.
For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse focused on Argentine ants, animals that often move from colony(群落)to colony depending on where the food is. Making use of Argentine ants' talent for fast travel, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges were different in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,000 ants.
Then the researchers sat back andmonitoredthe traffic. To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges were full of ants, there were no \"traffic accidents\". \"When the number of ants on the bridge increased, ants seemed to be able to understand the situation and adjusted(调整)their speed accordingly to avoid making the traffic flow stop. \"the authors note. \"Moreover, ants avoided entering a busy road and made sure that the bridge was never too packed to cross.”
The lesson for humans? The traffic problem may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. Driving is fun when there are few cars on the road. Then the traffic moves very slowly. And yet, some impatient driver still acts like he's alone on the road.
The research suggests that projects, like the ever-widening of highways, may never free us from traffic jams. As long as we drive along with our own habits, no matter how many other people are on the road, we'll always end up in a traffic jam. Indeed, less space may actually be a good thing. It leaves less room for individual choice and forces us to take a page from the driving book of ants. 1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The results of the experiments. B. The purpose of the experiments
C. The preparation of the experiments. D. The requirements of the experiments 2. What does the underlined word \"monitor\" in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. watch and check. B. seek and improve C. design and plan D. discuss and practise
3. What is the best title for the text? A. Is widening highways a solution? B. Why don't ants need traffic lights? C. Can we learn safe driving from ants? D. What can ants teach us about traffic jams?

Sonja Redding and her family were on their way home to Omaha, Nebraska, after a weeklong visit to Washington, D. C. with her two sons, one of whom, 5-year-old Xayvior, has autism(自闭症).
Although all of the other flights had gone fine, Xayvior became angry during one of the flights, and Redding couldn’t calm him.
“It felt like everyone on the plane was looking at us and got angry with my son, ” she wrote in a post after she got home. “I don’t know what to do when others just don’t understand that he is not just a kid with no discipline(自制力),but a child with special needs who doesn’t know how to control himself.”
The day was saved by Delta flight attendant(空乘人员)Amanda Amburgy. She tried to help Xayvior watch a movie, but when that failed, she offered to take him on a tour of the airplane. That worked, and soon the child was not only calm, but having a good time.
“When they came back, Xayvior was much calmer and happier,” wrote Redding in the post, which now has 2,700 likes and over 500 shares. “I want to thank this Delta attendant. She didn’t judge, and she just showed love. We need more people like this in the world. ”
It wasn’t long before Amburgy was told about the post.“ We’re there to help, and that’s what we want to do,” she said in an interview. “So, we always want to make anything easier for the family as well as other passengers.”
She also shared what she felt when she read Redding’s story. “When I read it, it touched my heart. It’s something I would do for anyone on the plane, because that’s what I’m here for. It really made a difference in her life.”
4. How did Redding feel on the plane? A. Tired. B. Uncomfortable. C. Very angry. D. Deeply afraid. 5. What did Amburgy do to help the family? A. She asked the family to stay beside her. B. She asked the other passengers for help.
C. She tried her best to calm the boy. D. She helped look after the other boy. 6. Why did Redding post the story? A. To show her thanks. B. To help kids with autism. C. To get in touch with Amburgy. D. To share her travel experience.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Amburgy? A. Proud. B. Honest.
C. Hard-working. D. Warm-hearted.

When I was trying to find a place where to spend my December holidays, I met by chance some cheap flights to Iceland. After checking just a few winter pictures of Iceland, I realized that the country, known as the land of fire and ice, during the cold months of the year could offer me experiences I had never had before.
For sure you can’t miss the chance to go to Iceland in winter if your traveling wish list includes at least one of the crazy experiences Iceland can offer. Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a paradise (乐园) for all those who want to see the northern lights, experience cold weather conditions and put themselves in geothermal (地热的) baths while the snow is falling on their head.
The best way to move around Iceland is with a rental car. Distances are huge and public transport in winter is not really common out of the major towns. As we wanted to be even more convenient we decided to rent a small camper (野营车). Sleeping and cooking in a camper saved us a lot of driving, money and gave us the chance tobe always in the right place at the right time.
There were also no locals and in many cases no tourist facilities (设备). For us, as we slept in a camper, it was easier. But for tourists traveling by normal cars it is necessary to check the opening times ofhotels and restaurants as many of them run just from June to September.
It is amazing to experience how the weather is changing in Iceland. However, Icelanders prefer to stay inside their houses. They have even no time to complain about the weather in December. All they care about is Christmas. They love to decorate their houses, sing Christmas songs and eat typical Christmas food. 8. Why is Iceland famous as the land of fire and ice? A. Because tourists would like to play with fire on the ice.
B. Because it is too dry to easily cause fire to happen. C. Because it is hot inside a house and cold outside. D. Because there exist hot springs and freezing ice. 9. What did the author think of the rented camper? A. It was not only practical but also economical. B. It was convenient but cost them more money. C. It provided the best chance to see the new country. D. It was much faster than other public transport. 10. What does the last paragraph imply? A. The Icelanders prefer to live with their family. B. The joy of Christmas drives the freezing weather away. C. December is the coldest month of the year. D. The Icelanders are always positive and stay outside. 11. What does this passage most probably come from? A. A textbook B. A scientific report C. A travel magazine D. A news report

Over the years, NASA has successfully sent several rovers (飞行器) to Mars. While the science laboratories continue to provide important information on the Red Planet, they keep the space exploration rovers staying closeto the original landing place. To get a more comprehensive (详尽的) view of Mars, the US Space Agency plans to make a small test helicopter with the Mars 2020 Rover, which will be sent off in July 2020.
The football-sized “marscopter” weighs about four pounds. It can fly at about ten times the speed of helicopters on Earth. The light weight and fast speed are important for the helicopter to be able to fly in the thin Mars atmosphere, which is about just one percent of that of Earth. “To make it fly in that thin Mars atmosphere, we had to make everything ready, and make it as light as possible while being as strong and powerful as it can possibly be. “Mimi Aung, Mars helicopter project manager, said in a meeting.
Upon landing on the Red Planet, the Mars 2020 Rover will find a proper location to send of the helicopter. The helicopter will start with a short climb, no higher than 10 feet, and hover (盘旋) for just 30 seconds before landing back on the Mars surface. If all goes well, five more flights of longer distances, for 90 seconds each, will be conducted over the next 30 days. The short journeys will be recorded by a small camera and sent back to the
scientists on Earth.
If the plan goes on well, the first helicopter to fly in another world, will open up a whole new way to explore Mars. The Mars helicopter's first flight will be a great invention. For those of us whose research is about flight, that would be a wonderful, historic moment.
12. To fly in thin Mars atmosphere,we should make the helicopter_______. A. strong and heavy B. heavy and fast C. light and fast D. strong and slow 13. How many times will the helicopter fly?
A. Three times B. Four times C. Five times D. Six times 14. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. It’s interesting to fly in another world. B. I' s important to fly in another world. C. The plan to fly the helicopter goes on well. D. The helicopters first flight is successful. 15. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. To send a helicopter to Mars in 2020 B. To send a rover to Mars in 2020 C. To live in the thin Mars atmosphere D. To send back records to scientists 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries.____16____.
____17____. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times.____18____, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
____19____, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound thebody as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research,____20____, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
A. Race walkers are conditioned athletes
B. Like running, race walking is physically demanding C. Having a medical checkup
D. It does, however, have its won problem.
E. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity. F. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries
G. runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分45分)

I won't forget the Earthquake for the rest of life. When it strikes, I was alone sleeping. Suddenly I felt my bed shaking. I jumped out of it, and I couldn't stand up because of the whole building seemed like it was moving back and forth. I was so scaring and felt hopeless. I felt myself very closely to God. And I thought that I was going to die. Seconds late the quake stopped and I rushed outside. But the scene shocked me to died. The high buildings beside mine had collapsed to the ground. I suffered for quite the long time after that. I was in great pain. Now I'm feeling more better and I think I've walked out the shadow of it and found the strength to move on. 第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, I turned up the next walkway. Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people. That's where the excitement was. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. I've got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I'd gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. There were the folks who got magazines, or book after book, those who loved their catalogues, and some who had steady pen pals. I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world — they could all make someone's day. I also brought doctor bills and insurance notices.
Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an older lady, who'd turned 78, and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery. She got her blood pressure pills and blood test kits for diabetes (糖尿病) in the Yesmail. Yes, convenient. But I was just the messenger, showing up every day like clockwork. It wasn't me who was making a difference in people's lives. Not me personally. A friendly hello, a chat with a lonely person. That was the most I could offer.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman's mail — and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She'd be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk, but not today.
